Summary: The Museum Exhibits Specialist designs and implements the assembly of museum exhibits for all Casper College museums. Responsibilities: The Museum Exhibits Specialist is responsible for the materials presented in the Casper College museums (Tate Geological Museum, Werner Wildlife Museum). Working in conjunction with the museum curators, Director of Museums, the School of Science Dean, and other museum staff (Museum Collections, Education, and Office Specialists) this position aides in the planning, implementation, and execution of educational displays, exhibits, and activities for all museum visitors. Additional duties that this position is responsible for are keeping museum standards up to current trends, fundraising, and strategic development. All of these duties are performed with assistance and direction from the Director of Museums. This position reports to the Director of Museums. Essential Duties: Research, design, coordinate, and implement the assembly and/or renovation of educational displays and exhibits. Coordinate the creation and implementation of educational material and activities in conjunction with the Museum Education Specialist Stay current in the field of Museum Studies with an emphasis on Natural Science with regard to national standards and best practices as recognized by the American Alliance of Museums in “National Standards & Best Practices for U.S. Museums”. Advise other museums staff on the standards outlined by the American Alliance of Museums in “National Standards & Best Practices for U.S. Museums”. Perform collections management and preservation (exhibit maintenance, conservation, pest control, etc.) Maintain collaborative relationships with other natural history museums. Perform consulting functions for various exhibit projects around the Casper College Campus and Community. Assist museum director in grant application and fundraising activities to include: Preparing materials for the grants office Providing exhibit information in regards to cost and materials Providing various assistance and coordination with all museum fundraising events (biannual fundraiser, open houses, raffles, membership drives, etc.) Assist Director and participate in strategic planning to include document preparation such as accession forms, condition reports, loan forms, de-accession forms, various museum policies and all cleaning procedures. Interact with the school district, educators, community organizations, other museums, and industries. Work with community members, the advisory board, and public relations department on museum outreach activities Temporary exhibits on and off campus Work with local experts on exhibit management Involvement with other museums in the local area Advise CC Foundation on campus art and exhibits Offer advice as an advisor to community members Provide information to the public relations office for use in publications, etc. Supervise student work-study employees and volunteers. Supervise Museum Studies interns for the entirety of the internship from project development and planning processes to installing the final exhibit. Perform a variety of other duties as assigned. Work Environment: Typical work environment is a public museum, classroom, or office setting requiring normal safety precautions. Work is performed in a workshop/prep lab environment which may contain dust, various construction materials, and loud noise. The employee is exposed to the public of all ages with frequent K-12 school district visits among other community groups. Short periods of time will be spent outdoors traveling between campus buildings in various weather conditions. The Exhibits Specialist may have the opportunity to travel to various sites on fossil or geological “digs”. Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, and walk. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is required to use various tools in the construction of museum exhibits including hammers, saws, power drills, screw drivers, and other common workshop tools. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more weight either with or without assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution in Museum Studies with an emphasis in Anthropology, Earth Science, Geology, Paleontology, or related field with a minimum of 1 year work experience working in museums, specifically with designing and installing exhibits, OR Associate’s Degree in similar fields with a minimum of 3 years similar work experience Knowledge of exhibit design in natural sciences and Museum educational best practices Ability to research potential exhibits using a wide variety of research methods and positively interact with clientele associated with museum education Ability to work with accuracy and attention to detail and effectively organize and prioritize duties Valid motor vehicle license at the time of hire and must obtain a Wyoming driver’s license within 30 days of hire. Must be insurable under the College’s insurance plan at the time of hire.
