Business Consultant Intern

Overview MSBDC - Massachusetts Small Business Development Center. Small Business Development Center- Western Massachusetts District Office (MSBDC) is located in Springfield, MA. The Western Mass office provides free, high-quality, one-on-one management and technical assistance counseling and educational programs to potential and existing small business entrepreneurs throughout Western Massachusetts. We help small business owners with start-up problems, business plan development, financial plan development, marketing and sales strategies, cash flow preparation and analysis, organizational and personnel issues, and other management topics related to running a small business. The MSBDC is part of the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts. Intern Description Intern Description- Interns at MSBDC are provided with an opportunity to work, mostly remotely, with small, local business owners in a variety of industries while developing skills associated with financial management, consulting and marketing practices. This is a great opportunity for those interested in gaining hands-on business experience in the field of entrepreneurship and consulting. Interns will also have the opportunity to apply skills learned in the classroom to "real-life" business situations. During this internship, you will gain transferable skills and insight into any business environment through the experienced and knowledgeable staff at MSBDC who are happy to share their expertise with the interns. As part of the internship, students will be invited to various seminars, webinars and workshops on a wide variety of topics relating to small businesses. From time to time, there may be special opportunities where interns may be invited to client presentations of their business ideas to venture capitalists. Interns are mentored by a UMASS – Isenberg SOM Adjunct Faculty member and the Center's Senior Business Advisor, Allen Kronick. Duties Duties may include, with consideration to the applicant's background : Participate in counseling sessions with professional management counselors and consultants. Perform detailed market research using University of Massachusetts Amherst databases as well as other databases. Review client financial statements, prepare financial projections such as cash flows, balance sheets and profit and loss statements. Interns will assist in preparing loan packages for clients in their pursuit of obtaining funding from lenders. Skills & Qualifications Strong oral and written communication skills. Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Familiarity with AI. Interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team. Basic understanding of financial statements; however, nonbusiness majors are encouraged to apply. Analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.
