Job SummaryThe Mechanical Engineer III (Staffing) will play a pivotal role in supporting the construction, installation, debugging, and startup of advanced manufacturing equipment and automated systems, primarily onsite in Wilmington, NC. This hands-on position is crucial for ensuring project execution meets safety, quality, and performance standards. The engineer will supervise internal and contract teams, interface with external partners, and drive continuous improvement in equipment installation and operational readiness.Key Responsibilities- Provide mechanical engineering support for equipment construction, installation, and startup at manufacturing sites- Supervise and direct engineering technicians, maintenance personnel, and contract trades during all project phases- Develop and manage project plans, schedules, and timelines to meet goals without compromising safety or quality- Identify, report, and investigate safety issues; ensure adherence to all safety protocols- Analyze equipment installation practices for efficiency improvements- Redesign mechanical components to resolve issues and optimize installation costs- Interface with external system integrators and machine builders to ensure timely, on-budget project delivery- Perform hands-on troubleshooting and direct teams to resolve technical issues- Create, review, and update technical documentation, drawings, and installation checklists- Procure and expedite materials for new or modified equipment installations- Assess existing equipment suitability in relation to new projects- Provide training on new equipment installation proceduresRequired Skills & Education- BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent- Minimum of 3+ years’ experience in manufacturing environments with hands-on equipment work- Proficient in using hand tools, measurement, and alignment devices- Strong understanding of process variables (flow, temperature, rate, pressure, level)- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, P&IDs, and schematics- Familiar with mechanical drive trains, electrical, and pneumatic actuators- Team-oriented, self-motivated, adaptable to changing priorities, and proactive in safetyPreferred Skills- Experience with AutoCAD, Inventor, MS Project, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams- Project management experience (scope, budgets, schedules)- Knowledge of optical fiber manufacturing processes- Effective communication and presentation skillsTravel Requirements- Occasional travel to domestic and international manufacturing sites, with increased travel during deployment phasesWork Schedule- Full-time, onsite (Wilmington, NC), 40+ hours/week; flexibility required during project life cycle phasesRecruiter InsightsThis role is ideal for recruiters seeking candidates with strong hands-on mechanical engineering skills, proven leadership in project execution, and a safety-focused mindset.
