Position OverviewApex Skin is a physician-led and rapidly growing dermatology and pathology practice committed to delivering exceptional patient care and diagnostic accuracy. We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Histotechnician to support our pathology team by preparing high-quality tissue specimens for microscopic examination.This role is responsible for all aspects of specimen processing, including accessioning, embedding, microtomy, staining, and quality control. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong technical ability, attention to detail, and a commitment to maintaining specimen integrity and laboratory compliance standards throughout all stages of processing.ScheduleFull-time: 40 hours per week3rd shift schedule: start time varies between 11:00 PM – 1:00 AMMonday through Friday - No weekendsSchedule may vary based on operational needsEssential FunctionsSpecimen Processing & AccessioningReceive and accession specimens using the Laboratory Information System (LIS)Verify all specimen identifiers, including containers, requisitions, and cassettes, prior to processingMaintain strict specimen tracking and integrity throughout all stages of preparationPerform grossing techniques including dissection, inking, and sectioningProcess one specimen at a time to ensure accuracy and prevent cross-contaminationEmbedding, Sectioning & Slide PreparationProperly embed tissue specimens with correct orientationPerform microtomy to produce high-quality sections free of defectsEnsure slides meet laboratory quality standards, including full-face sections and proper stainingPerform recuts and additional preparations as neededStaining & Advanced ProceduresPerform routine and special stains using approved protocolsConduct immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining, including use of appropriate controlsAssist in validation processes for new antibodies and staining protocolsPrepare reagents, solutions, and stains according to laboratory standardsQuality Control & ComplianceFollow strict verification processes at each stage of specimen handling:Requisition ↔ ContainerContainer ↔ CassetteCassette ↔ SlideMaintain compliance with CAP, CLIA, OSHA, HIPAA, and state regulationsEnsure proper labeling, storage, and disposal of chemicalsUtilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all timesEquipment & Laboratory MaintenanceOperate, clean, and maintain laboratory instruments and equipmentPerform daily cleaning and preventative maintenanceDocument maintenance and troubleshooting activitiesNotify leadership of equipment issues or supply needsOperational SupportAssist pathologists and laboratory staff as neededFile, retrieve, and distribute slides, blocks, and reportsMonitor inventory levels and communicate supply needsAnswer laboratory phone calls and assist with inquiriesStay current with updates to laboratory procedures and protocolsQualificationsCompletion of a NAACLS-accredited histotechnology programOR Associate degree with at least one year of histopathology experience under a pathologistASCP certification as a Histotechnician (HT) requiredStrong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy and qualityAbility to follow strict protocols and maintain specimen integrityProficiency with laboratory systems and documentation practicesExperience with immunohistochemistry (IHC) preferredFamiliarity with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) preferredCareer Growth OpportunitiesMotivated Histotechnicians may pursue:Histotechnologist (HTL) certification and advanced pathology rolesSpecialization in immunohistochemistry or molecular pathologyLead Histotech or laboratory supervisory positionsCross-training in laboratory operations, quality, or complianceApex Skin supports ongoing development through training, mentorship, and opportunities for advancement within our growing pathology and laboratory services teamPhysical Requirements & Work EnvironmentWork performed in a laboratory setting with exposure to:Chemical hazardsBloodborne pathogensSharps and laboratory equipmentProlonged periods of standing, walking, and performing fine motor tasksAbility to occasionally lift up to 25 poundsRequires strong visual acuity, including color differentiation and close visionMust maintain focus and precision in a fast-paced, detail-oriented environmentRequired to follow all safety, hazard communication, and infection control protocols
