This position plays a vital role in supporting teachers and helping students succeed academically, socially, and emotionally.Essential Duties and Responsibilities(These duties are illustrative and not exhaustive.)Instructional SupportAssist the teacher in implementing lesson plans and instructional activitiesProvide one-on-one and small group instruction to reinforce skills in reading, math, and other subjectsSupport students in completing assignments and understanding instructional materialAssist with differentiated instruction and accommodations as directedStudent SupportAssist students with academic, social, emotional, and behavioral needsSupport students with disabilities in accordance with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) when applicableHelp students stay on task and follow classroom expectationsProvide assistance with personal care (if assigned), including hygiene, feeding, or mobility needsClassroom ManagementMonitor student behavior in classrooms, hallways, cafeteria, playground, and during transitionsReinforce school and classroom rules and expectationsAssist in maintaining a safe, orderly, and positive learning environmentClerical and Organizational SupportPrepare instructional materials, copies, and classroom resourcesMaintain student records, files, and basic data as assignedAssist with grading objective assignments and tracking student progressSupervision DutiesSupervise students during arrival, dismissal, lunch, recess, and other non-instructional timesAssist with bus duty or hallway monitoring as assignedCollaborationWork cooperatively with teachers, administrators, and support staffCommunicate effectively with school personnel regarding student needs and progressParticipate in meetings, training, and professional development as requiredOther DutiesMaintain confidentiality of student and school information (FERPA compliance)Follow all School Board policies, procedures, and safety guidelinesPerform other duties as assigned by the principal or designeeKnowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesBasic understanding of child development and instructional practicesAbility to follow oral and written instructions and implement lesson plansAbility to work effectively with children of varying abilities and backgroundsStrong interpersonal and communication skillsAbility to maintain patience, flexibility, and professionalism in a school settingAbility to maintain confidentiality and ethical conductMinimum QualificationsHigh school diploma or GED requiredMust meet one of the following (per federal/Title I guidance commonly used in Virginia):Completion of at least two years of college coursework, orAssociate's degree or higher, orPassing score on an approved paraprofessional assessmentExperience working with children preferred(Virginia divisions commonly require these qualifications to demonstrate ability to assist with instruction.)Physical RequirementsAbility to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 25-50 pounds as neededAbility to assist students with mobility and physical needsAbility to actively supervise students indoors and outdoorsWorking ConditionsSchool environment (classroom, playground, cafeteria, bus areas)Exposure to noise, activity, and varying student needsMay include working with students with behavioral or medical needs
