Substation Engineer (Independence)

A growing, well-established electrical engineering firm based in Northeast Ohio is hiring a Substation Engineer to help lead its expanding substation and medium-to-high voltage power practice. This is a hands-on technical lead role with real ownership, not a cog-in-a-large-machine seat.Why this role is worth a conversation:- Lead substation projects (12kV to 345kV) from feasibility through final design- Technically demanding, never-boring work across industrial, commercial, and mission-critical infrastructure- Small team of sharp, experienced engineers — your work is visible and your voice matters- Real room to grow as the firm scales its substation and high-voltage practice- Genuine work-life balance — a culture that values your time outside the office- Competitive base salary, bonus, full health benefits, retirement with match, PTO, and expense reimbursementWhat you will do:- Lead substation and medium-to-high voltage power projects, locally and nationally- Take projects from feasibility studies through final design and Issued For Construction- Develop preliminary layouts, single-line and three-line diagrams, equipment schedules, station elevations, and duct bank details- Provide P&C (protection and control) coordination and guidance- Perform ground grid analysis, short circuit studies, protective device coordination, lightning protection, and load flow analysis- Coordinate foundation and structural steel design with multi-discipline teams- Organize work for and mentor junior engineers- Communicate directly with end-users and provide technical guidance through construction- Operate independently with minimal day-to-day directionWhat we are looking for:- 5+ years of power electrical engineering experience in the 12kV to 345kV range- Substation design experience across schematic design, design development, and construction documents- Working knowledge of power system analysis software such as ETAP, SKM, WinIGS, or EasyPower- Proficiency with AutoCAD and Revit- Advanced understanding of NESC and IEEE codes and standards- Project management or project lead experience- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology (EET)- Strong written and verbal communicationNice to have (not required):- Professional Engineer (PE) license, or active progress toward one- Exposure to data center, mission-critical, or large industrial power infrastructure- Advanced degree in electrical engineeringLogistics:- On-site in Independence, Ohio — candidates must be local or willing to commute- Light domestic travel (under 10%) for fieldwork and onsite meetings- Full-time, salaried, exempt- Direct hireAbout the search:This is a confidential search managed by On Mission Resources, an engineering recruiting firm based in Northeast Ohio.
