SummaryThe Registered Nurse is organizationally aligned under Ambulatory Care Services - where he/she will work as part of - and in collaboration with - a larger clinical team to provide Women's Health services to the Central Virginia VA Healthcare System Veteran patient population.QualificationsBasic Requirements:English Language ProficiencyIn accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f) - no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken EnglishGraduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)OR Individuals attending a master's level bridge program in nursing who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor's level degree in Nursing may have opportunity to become registered as a nurse with a state licensing board prior to completion of the bridge programUpon achievement of a State license - the individual may be appointed on temporary basis and later converted to a permanent appointment upon successful completion and graduation from the bridge program(Reference VA Handbook 5005 - Appendix G6)OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing - possession of a current - full - active - and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing to warrant an appointment as a Nurse who has completed an associated degree/entry level Nursing education programCredit for foreign nursing education higher that associate degree/entry level requires a formal degree equivalency validation from a recognized equivalency evaluation accepted by VA such as International Consultants of Delaware (ICD)Current - full - active - and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State - Territory or Commonwealth (i.e. - Puerto Rico) of the United States - or the District of ColumbiaGraduate Nurse Technician (GNT) Exception: Candidates who otherwise meet the basic education requirements - but do not possess the required licensure - may be appointed at the entry step of the grade and level applicable to the completed nursing education as a GNT on a 120-day temporary appointment while actively pursuing licensure (may be extended up to two years on a case-by-case-basis.) such as annual TB screening or testing - as a condition of employment.DutiesThe Women's Health RN will assume routine clinical care delivery and administrative roles consistent with this specialty clinicThis is for Women's Health ClinicThe RN is directly responsible to the Primary Care Nurse Manager in charge of this clinicDuties include - but are not limited to: -Proficient using VA EMR and nursing specific documentation - care coordination - phone triage - walk-in triage and physical assessmentsProficient in administering medications (All routes and 5 rights) - enter laboratory orders and/or draw laboratory specimens per protocol and correctly and safely performs all nursing proceduresAble to perform other staff member's roles as neededRecognizes abnormal signs and symptoms and/or changes in patients' condition and responds appropriately - notifies the provider - and document in the medical record-Assisting with initial VA consult referrals for mammography - gynecology - and/or other care - assisting with VA or community services for the patient with an appropriate provider - to include coordinating any subsequent appointments or follow-up - as needed-Educating patients on a variety of OB/Gyn topics - to include importance of routine medical screenings - and authorized VA and community-based resources for OB/Gyn needs-Assisting veterans who have presented to VA or non-VA emergency department for OB/Gyn emergencies to secure appropriate follow-up care such as lab - ultrasound - emotional support - and/or other care as neededCoordinating care with the Veterans PACT-Documenting patient care interactions accurately - succinctly - and timely - using appropriate notes - templates - and clinical reminders - in the electronic medical record-Understanding and responding to mammography reports - BIRADS - Pap - and other OB/Gyn screening/diagnostic test results.-Contacting patients who fail to keep mammogram appointments - or who are delinquent in obtaining recommended breast cancer - Cervical Cancer Screening - and other diagnostic screenings - to determine and resolve obstacles the veteran may have with keeping appointments and educating women on these screenings-Maintaining professional skills in the application of professional bodies of knowledge and accepted clinical practices that will facilitate oversight of service delivery for female patient care.-Participating in quality improvement programs and initiatives including system redesign - to improve access - quality - efficiency - and patient satisfactionData tracking - formulating - continual evaluation of quality measures - and identification and implementation of best practices for the Women's Health Program-Clinical outreach coordination - education - and mentoring for local and rural areas that include VA Video Connect (VVC) - phone - and in-person visits with female veterans.-Cross-training and surrogate coverage for the OB-GYN Nurse and PACT RN Care Manager duties-Collaboration with other healthcare members to identify common social issues of gynecological patients like Intimate Partner Assault -
