Yard Goat Driver
Overview
Join our dynamic logistics team as a Yard Goat Driver, where you’ll be the essential link in moving freight efficiently and safely within our distribution network. As a Yard Goat Driver, you will operate specialized yard tractors, also known as yard goats or shunters, to connect trailers and facilitate smooth cargo transfer. Your role is vital in ensuring timely deliveries, maintaining compliance with safety regulations, and supporting overall operational excellence. Duties
Operate yard tractors (yard goats) to move refrigerated trailers, flatbeds, tankers, and other freight containers within the yard and loading areas
Connect and disconnect trailers with precision, ensuring proper coupling and safety checks before movement
Use GPS navigation systems to accurately position trailers and optimize yard workflows
Load and unload freight using manual handling techniques, forklifts, or other equipment as needed while adhering to safety standards
Assist with the safe transportation of hazardous materials (hazmat) and dangerous goods following FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) regulations
Follow DOT (Department of Transportation) regulations for commercial truck driving, including hours of service and vehicle inspections
Maintain accurate logs of trailer movements, cargo handling activities, and route documentation for compliance purposes
Requirements
Valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements for tractor-trailer operation, including hazmat if applicable
Proven experience in truck driving, delivery driving, or yard operations involving tractor-trailers or similar equipment
Familiarity with refrigerated trailers, flatbeds, tankers, dump trucks, roll-off trucks, or freight handling equipment such as forklifts
Knowledge of FMCSA regulations, hazardous materials regulations, DOT safety standards, and logistics cargo handling procedures
Ability to manually handle cargo safely and efficiently while following safety protocols
Experience with route driving on over-the-road (OTR) routes preferred but not required; willingness to work flexible shifts as needed
Strong understanding of truck loading/unloading processes and trailer coupling/decoupling techniques
Excellent driving skills with a focus on safety and compliance in commercial vehicle operation
