Senior Engineer I - Material Testing

Job Description SummaryThe Senior Engineer I is a key member of BD's Corporate Digital Engineering Simulation & Testing (DE S&T) team, supporting the development of life saving medical technologies through high quality experimental work. This role focuses on executing and advancing DE S&T capabilities in material testing and characterization, material data processing, and benchtop experimental investigations. The Senior Engineer I will design and run custom experiments, provide technical expertise, and help establish best practices for the team. Experimental data generated in this role will directly support structural analysts, inform computational models, and serve as standalone evidence for product development and stewardship, ensuring BD delivers rigorously validated, high quality products to patients and clinicians.Job DescriptionWe are the makers of possibleBD is one of the largest global medical technology companies in the world. Advancing the world of health is our Purpose, and it's no small feat. It takes the imagination and passion of all of us-from design and engineering to the manufacturing and marketing of our billions of MedTech products per year-to look at the impossible and find transformative solutions that turn dreams into possibilities. We believe that the human element, across our global teams, is what allows us to continually evolve. Join us and discover an environment in which you'll be supported to learn, grow and become your best self. Become a maker of possible with us.Job Responsibilities: (Primary Duties, Roles, and/or Authorities)* Design and implement experimental plans to characterize complex polymer materials and support calibration of nonlinear material models for simulation.* Apply relevant ASTM and ISO standards as well as internal SOPs relevant for material specimen testing under different loading rates and environmental conditions.* Perform advanced material testing and characterization to support product development across BD's Medical, Interventional, and Connected Care segments.* Develop custom fixtures and test methods that gather product‐specific physics and meet DE S&T simulation objectives.* Operate precision measurement instruments (e.g., load cells, extensometers, calipers, micrometers) with high accuracy.* Use engineering tools (e.g. hand calculations, DOEs) to complement experimental work and deepen understanding of product behavior.* Translate broad or ambiguous technical questions into effective experimental strategies and analytical methods, adapting as needed to efficiently obtain high-value data and convert it into clear, actionable conclusions that guide material characterization and product development.* Support development of new experimental methods and technologies; coordinate with internal partners and external labs; recommend acquisition or development of high‐value tools.* Promote DE S&T capabilities through webinars, forums, and divisional engagement.* Communicate progress and results to product teams through presentations, discussions, and formal technical reports stored in the DE Projects database.* Maintain innovative expertise through training, seminars, and conferences, and represent BD at industry events as a subject‐matter expert in material characterization and experimental methods.Required Skills:* Required: minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience with universal testing machines and related software (Instron and BlueHill strongly preferred).* Familiarity with 3D CAD solid modeling software, preferably SolidWorks.* Strong attention to detail in planning and implementing experimental protocols to ensure consistent, reliable material characterization data.* Consistent, accurate, and timely completion of assigned responsibilities while adhering to BD policies, procedures, and applicable laws.* Ability to work independently and collaboratively, prioritize tasks, and drive assignments to completion.* Collaborative attitude with the ability to contribute effectively within multi-functional teams across BDX.Preferred Skills:* Knowledge of Measurement System Analysis (e.g. gauge R&R), calibration & uncertainty, and similar techniques.* Experience programming in LabVIEW.* Experience collecting material data specifically for constitutive model development.* Programming/scripting experience; Python and/or MATLAB preferred.* Experience in the medical industryEducation:* Required: degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field and one of the following.* B.S. with 6 years of relevant experience* M.S. with 4 years of relevant experience (preferred)* Ph.D. with 2 years of relevant experience (preferred)Physical Demands: (if applicable)This role requires physical activity associated with laboratory-based testing. This includes:* Handling polymers and gases in a lab environment.* Operating and setting up mechanical testing equipment (e.g., Instron, Tensile machine load cell changing).* Performing repetitive tasks such as sample preparation, mounting, and alignment.* Standing for extended periods during experimental procedures.
