SMS Burns Harbor is seeking a highly skilled, results-driven and dependable Shift Supervisor. This role is responsible for is responsible for overseeing daily production activities, ensuring safe work practices, coordinating manpower, and driving productivity while maintaining quality standards.The ideal candidate is a proven leader who can supervise crews, solve problems quickly, and work alongside employees when needed in a fast-paced industrial setting.SMS provides a comprehensive range of services for steel mill customers. We partner with our customers to design custom, cost-effective solutions, which focus on adding value and achieving goals for the operation and the environment. Our range of services includes, but is not limited scrap yard management, finished or semi-finished product services, melt shop services, logistics/transportation support, and slag processing.Key Responsibilities:Supervise and direct unionized hourly employees during assigned shift operationsCoordinate daily workflow, job assignments, and manpower coverageHold pre-shift meetingsEnsure production goals are met safely and efficientlyMonitor scrap handling, material movement, loading/unloading, and processing activitiesEnforce company safety rules, PPE requirements, and operational proceduresConduct shift start-up meetings and communicate priorities clearlyTrain, coach, and develop employees on safe work practices and job performanceAddress attendance, conduct, and performance issues in coordination with managementComplete production reports, shift logs, and operational paperworkCommunicate equipment issues, downtime, and maintenance needs promptlyWork closely with operations management, maintenance, scale house, and customer personnelStep in and perform operational tasks when staffing or production needs require itLeadership & Safety ResponsibilitiesPromote a strong safety culture and lead by exampleMaintain accountability, discipline, and professionalism on shiftEnsure housekeeping standards are maintained throughout work areasRespond to operational issues quickly and make sound decisions under pressureFollow all company safety policies and PPE requirementsWork safely in a dusty, dirty, outdoor steel mill scrap environment with frequent truck traffic and heavy equipment activityQualificationsHigh school diploma or GED requiredPrevious supervisory or lead experience in industrial, steel mill, scrap, manufacturing, or construction environments preferredStrong leadership, communication, and decision-making skillsExperience managing hourly workforces in a fast-paced settingAbility to motivate teams and hold employees accountableBasic computer skills for reports, scheduling, and communication – Excel is a must!Dependable attendance and flexibility to work shifts, weekends, and overtime as neededPhysical / Work ConditionsAbility to work in an industrial steel mill scrap yard environmentExposure to noise, weather changes, dust, and moving equipmentAbility to walk site regularly, climb stairs, and work in active operations areasWhat we can Offer:A comprehensive compensation package to commensurate with experience including bonusesBenefits include Medical, Dental, Vision, company-paid life insurance, etc. offered on day 1!401(k) with 4% matching, 100% vested as of first contributionPaid holidays, 4 weeks paid vacationWork in a dynamic, collaborative, progressive, and high-performing teamStable full-time opportunityCompetitive pay and benefitsOpportunity to grow within operations and administrationSMS Mill Services, LLC is an equal opportunity employer that is committed to diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
