Director of BESS Operations

Utility-Scale Battery Energy Storage | IPP / Developer | USAWe are partnered with a leading Independent Power Producer (IPP) and Developer at the forefront of utility-scale renewable energy and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) across North America. With a strong pipeline of operational and in-development projects, they are looking to appoint a Director of BESS Operations to lead the strategy, performance, and long-term optimization of their growing storage portfolio.This is a high-impact leadership role responsible for overseeing the operational performance, reliability, safety, and commercial optimization of utility-scale BESS assets across multiple markets.Key ResponsibilitiesLead all operational activities across a portfolio of utility-scale BESS assets, ensuring safety, availability, and performance targets are consistently achievedDevelop and implement long-term operations strategy for standalone BESS and hybrid renewable + storage projectsManage O&M providers, asset managers, EPC partners, OEMs, and third-party service providers across the full operational lifecycleOversee asset performance analysis, root cause investigations, reliability improvements, and preventative maintenance strategiesDrive compliance with NERC, ISO, utility, OEM, and regulatory requirements across operating assetsPartner closely with commercial, trading, and asset management teams to maximize project revenue and market participation opportunitiesSupport commissioning, turnover, and operational readiness for new projects entering commercial operationDevelop operational KPIs, reporting structures, and continuous improvement initiatives across the portfolioLead technical responses for warranty claims, major equipment failures, and performance disputesBuild and mentor a high-performing operations team as the platform continues to scaleRequirements10+ years of experience in power generation, renewable energy, or energy infrastructure operationsStrong direct experience managing utility-scale BESS operations is essentialExperience within an IPP, developer, asset owner, OEM, or large-scale renewable platform preferredStrong understanding of battery technologies, EMS/SCADA systems, grid services, and asset optimization strategiesKnowledge of ISO markets, ancillary services, and energy trading considerations highly desirableExperience managing third-party O&M providers and operational contractsStrong commercial acumen with the ability to balance technical performance and financial returnsProven leadership experience managing cross-functional teams and external stakeholdersExcellent communication and executive reporting capabilitiesBachelor’s degree in Engineering, Energy, or related field preferredWhy Join?Join one of the fastest-growing BESS platforms in the marketHigh-visibility leadership role with direct executive influenceOpportunity to shape long-term operational strategy across a major storage portfolioStrong compensation package including bonus and long-term incentivesRemote flexibility with travel to project sites as requiredIf you are looking to lead operations for one of the most exciting BESS platforms in the market, we would love to speak with you.
