Wegner CPAs is proud to partner with a Madison-based 501(c)(3) organization that supports Dane County residents through community involvement, mentorship, education, employment skills, supportive housing, transportation, financial literacy, and youth programming.This is a hybrid, flexible, and part-time position with an anticipated 20 hours of week per week.KEY RESPONSIBILITIESSupport day-to-day accounting operations, including review and processing support for accounts payable and accounts receivable activities.Work alongside the bookkeeper to review general ledger activity, coding accuracy, account classifications, and supporting documentation.Prepare and/or review monthly bank, credit card, and other balance sheet reconciliations and resolve reconciling items promptly.Assist with month-end and year-end close processes, financial schedules, journal entry support, and account analysis.Maintain organized financial records and document retention practices for invoices, receipts, contracts, grants, statements, reconciliations, audit workpapers, and related accounting files.Help strengthen and document internal controls, accounting procedures, and financial workflows in alignment with nonprofit best practices.Prepare schedules and support requests for the annual audit, Form 990 support, grant reporting support, and other external financial reviews as assigned.Monitor supporting documentation for restricted and program-related activity to improve reporting accuracy and audit readiness.Identify discrepancies, unusual trends, or control gaps and communicate recommendations clearly to leadership.Provide accounting guidance, training support, and process follow-through to ensure consistent financial practices across the organization.Maintain strict confidentiality when handling donor, employee, participant, vendor, and organizational financial information.Perform other finance and accounting duties reasonably related to the role and organizational needs.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSActive Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license required.Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field required.At least three years of progressive accounting experience, with demonstrated experience in AP, AR, reconciliations, and financial reporting support.Strong understanding of GAAP, internal controls, and accounting documentation standards.Demonstrated ability to work accurately with deadlines, organize records, and follow through on unresolved items.Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel and experience using accounting or bookkeeping systems.Ability to collaborate professionally with a bookkeeper, executive leadership, auditors, vendors, and outside partners.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONSExperience working with a nonprofit organization, including fund accounting, grant reporting, donor-restricted activity, or audit preparation.Experience supporting annual external audits and preparing supporting schedules for auditors or tax professionals.Experience developing or improving accounting procedures, internal controls, and document retention systems.Strong communication skills and an ability to support a mission-driven team in a practical, service-oriented way.SCHEDULE AND WORK ENVIRONMENTThis is a flexible hybrid position with a mix of remote work and on-site support based on organizational needs, deadlines, and audit or finance priorities.The expected schedule may vary by week; occasional additional availability may be needed during month-end close, year-end close, audit preparation, or board reporting periods.
