Law Enforcement Cadet

Brief DescriptionThe Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Cadet Program is designed to provide on the job training to young men and women in a law enforcement environment. The program serves as a student intern opportunity for high school graduates pursuing a career in law enforcement while attending college. Upon successful completion of the program, cadets will be educated and experienced in various functions of the sheriff's office.Cadets are a non-sworn personnel working in support positions of the sheriff's office.Examples Of DutiesCadets day to day duties consist of general office work in any of the following Sheriff's Office units: Public Information Unit, Patrol Division, Civil/Warrants Unit, Evidence Vault, Recruiting and Training Unit, Detentions Services Division, Support Services Division, and Emergency Services.Cadets may be asked to assist with various special assignments within the sheriff's office:Sheriff's Office Open HouseAcademy Graduation CeremoniesEmergency Call-OutsSpecial EventsThe ride along program includes one paid day per month with a field training instructor and one optional unpaid day a month.The Sheriff's Office will attempt to rotate the cadets for a minimum of six months service in each division to provide equal exposure to all areas within the organization.QualificationsA college student from the age of 17 through 21 may apply to the Cadet Program.Cadet applicants must be a high school graduate and currently enrolled in an accredited college or university, taking a minimum of 9 credit hours per semester. Typing and computer skills are strongly recommended.Supplemental InformationCadets must maintain a minimum semester grade-point-average of 2.5. Failure to maintain this standard will result in probationary status for one semester. If the minimum grade point average is not attained, the cadet may be terminated.Reimbursements for tuition and covered expenses are paid to cadets for successful completion of college or university classes taken for credit.
