Protection and Control Technician (Technician, Senior, Lead)Job SummaryThe Protection and Control Technician is responsible for delivering high-quality testing and verification services for utility and industrial-scale power systems. This role supports protection and control maintenance, upgrades, and new installations across the full project lifecycle—from design validation through system energization.The position helps ensure electrical systems are installed, tested, and commissioned in accordance with design intent, project specifications, and industry standards, while minimizing risk and supporting safe, reliable system operation.Volta services seek candidates that have a dedication to safety and human performance, are highly technical and skilled, and that will act with integrity when working with others and our customers.Key ResponsibilitiesExecute comprehensive electrical testing activities to verify proper installation and system integrationEnsure compliance with design intent, project specifications, codes, and industry standardsSupport system energization and turnover to operationsPerform protective relay testing, calibration, and settings verificationValidate proper operation of protection systems - Ensure integrated system components operate together as designedIdentify and resolve misconfigurations or performance issues prior to energizationSupport system reliability by preventing nuisance trips, equipment damage, and outagesConduct functional testing of protection, control, and automation systemsSimulate operating conditions to verify logic, interlocks, alarms, and system responsesPerform testing and validation of metering systems, including revenue-grade and power quality metersEnsure compliance with utility requirements and project specificationsReview electrical designs, including drawings, protection schemes, control logic, and system settingsProvide technical recommendations to improve system safety, reliability, and performanceDiagnose and resolve protection mis operations, control system issues, alarms, and performance anomaliesQualificationsProtection and Controls technician:Minimum associate’s degree in electrical technology, Army Prime Power or Navy Nuclear electrical program, apprenticeship or 1-3 years substation protection and controls field experienceKnowledge of electrical power systems, protection, and control conceptsExperience with relay testing – electro-mechanical and microprocessor relaysAbility to read and interpret electrical drawings, AC/DC schematics, and protection schemesStrong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skillsEffective communication and technical abilitiesCommitment to safety, quality, and human performanceAbility to travel within defined footprintValid driver's license with clean driving recordOsha 30NFPA 70ESenior Level Protection And Control Technician Qualifications IncludeMinimum associate’s degree in electrical technology, Army Prime Power or Navy Nuclear electrical program, or apprenticeship and 1-3 years substation protection and controls field experience or 5+ years substation protection and controls field experienceLead Level Protection And Control Technician Qualifications IncludeMinimum associate’s degree in electrical technology, Army Prime Power or Navy Nuclear electrical program or apprenticeship and 5 years substation protection and controls field experience or 7+ years substation protection and controls field experienceBenefitsOutfitted company vehicle and fuel cardCompany Required PPE, Tools, And EquipmentFR clothing allowanceCell phone allowanceSafety shoes/prescription glasses reimbursementHourly Wage with applicable overtime ratesPer Diem and travelPaid holidaysPaid vacation fundShort term disabilityRetirement planMedical, Dental, Vision – 100% employer funded for employee + family
