In this role, you will design, implement, and optimize automated systems within a plastic extrusion environment to improve machine performance, increase uptime, and drive continuous improvement. The Automation Engineer will be based in Atlanta, Georgia and will report into the Process Engineering Manager.This is a hands-on engineering role ideal for someone who enjoys solving complex technical challenges and collaborating across production, maintenance, and engineering teams.ResponsibilitiesDesign, program, and troubleshoot PLC, HMI, and control systems for extrusion and downstream equipmentOptimize automation across production lines, including material handling, cooling, cutting, and winding systemsDiagnose and resolve electrical and controls issues to minimize downtime and improve equipment reliabilityLead and support continuous improvement initiatives focused on safety, quality, and productivityPartner with maintenance and production teams to enhance overall operational efficiencySupport new equipment installations, upgrades, and commissioning activitiesDevelop and maintain technical documentation such as schematics, programs, and standard operating proceduresAnalyze production data to identify trends and recommend process improvementsEnsure compliance with safety regulations and best practices for automation systemsProvide training and technical support to operations and maintenance teamsEducation And ExperienceBachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Automation Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field (or equivalent experience)5+ years of experience in industrial automation within a manufacturing environmentHands-on experience with PLC programming (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Keyence, Cognex)Experience with HMI and/or SCADA systemsStrong troubleshooting skills in electrical and control systemsKnowledge of industrial components including sensors, drives, motion control, and networks (e.g., EtherNet/IP, Profibus)Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and technical drawingsPreferred QualificationsExperience in plastic extrusion or continuous manufacturing processesFamiliarity with vision systemsExperience managing or supporting engineering projectsSkillsStrong analytical and problem-solving skillsEffective communication and collaboration across teamsAbility to thrive in a fast-paced manufacturing environmentContinuous improvement mindset and attention to detailWork EnvironmentManufacturing with exposure to machinery, noise, and varying temperaturesOccasional off-shift or on-call support may be requiredWhy Join Us?Opportunity to work on impactful automation projects in a critical manufacturing environmentCollaborative and team-oriented cultureCareer growth and development opportunitiesAbility to make a direct impact on operational performanceCompensation InformationThe salary range for this position is $100,000.00 to $110,000.00 annually. The pay rate for a successful candidate will depend on the geographic location, this salary range is for a successful candidate in the Atlanta metro area.
