DepartmentUniversity Health Services (UHS)ResponsibilitiesPerforms complete physical examinations.Following approved Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) protocols, performs diagnostic examinations and examinations for specific complaints in the identification of illnesses and injuries.Initiates diagnostic laboratory tests, x-rays, and other procedures as medically indicated. May perform indicated minor surgical and non-invasive diagnostic procedures.Makes medical assessments and initiates procedures and/or treatments within established protocols under the direction of the physician.Documents the patient history, physical and emotional state, diagnostic findings and treatment in the patient's medical record/Electronic Medical Record (EMR).Reviews and discusses with patient the results of laboratory, x-ray, and other procedures.Makes medically indicated referrals to other specialists/consultants as necessary.Confers with physician regarding patient management when appropriate.May function as a preceptor for Nurse Practitioner students.Actively participates in the revision of APRN protocols annually.Assists in the development of educational and instructional materials and programs.As needed, assists in patient triage and phone inquiries and orientation and training of personnel assisting with patient care.Attends and participates on committees, conducts case presentations, and during periods of reduced clinical demand (ie: summer), may support other administrative, outreach, or operational tasks as needed to support the overall mission and function of the department.
