Emergency Department Scribe

Position OverviewUnited Health Services (UHS) is seeking an Emergency Department Scribe to perform administrative and clerical duties in support of therapy services, utilizing knowledge of medical terminology, hospital processes, and therapeutic procedures. Responsibilities include scheduling appointments, patient registration, insurance verification, and maintaining accurate medical records. Serves as a point of contact for patients, providing reception support, and utilizes departmental and hospital software systems to complete daily tasks efficiently.Primary Department, Division, Or UnitEmergency Department, UHS Binghamton General HospitalPrimary Work ShiftRotationalRegular Scheduled Weekly Hours20Compensation Range$17.05 - $22.17 per hour, depending on experienceJob ResponsibilitiesThis position is not eligible for benefits.Completes necessary communication for patient processing, including answering multi-line telephone system, scheduling patient appointments, recording and relaying information to staff, patients, and other customersCompletes registration of all new patients, including identifying and completing demographic and insurance verificationEnsures authorization for insurance is obtained prior to patient’s initial visit, and continued authorization for additional treatment sessionsSchedules patient evaluation appointments and subsequent treatment sessionsManages outpatient scheduling for clinicians dailyPrepares patient medical record prior to initial visit, and assists with ongoing medical record managementPerforms daily billingCompiles departmental statistics daily and reports to Administrative Secretary on a monthly basisTracks and assists with documentation and claims processing for Medicare and Workers’ Compensation claims to ensure reimbursement of rehab servicesAssists HIM in processing medical record requests and ensures authorization to release patient informationCollects and processes co-payments from patients when applicableTypes monthly departmental staff meeting minutes and distributes to appropriate staffHas knowledge of and participates in departmental and organizational initiatives for performance improvement (PI).Demonstrates knowledge of hospital and departmental infection control policies Position QualificationsMinimum Required:High School Diploma or equivalentKnowledge of general office procedures and practiceStrong computer skills, including proficiency with standard office and healthcare software systemsPreferredPrior experience as a medical receptionist, including familiarity with insurance processes related to outpatient medical servicesFoundational knowledge of principles and procedures in physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech and language pathology, and cardiac rehabilitationAbout United Health ServicesUnited Health Services (UHS) is a locally owned, not-for-profit healthcare system in New York’s Southern Tier comprising four hospitals, long-term care and home care services, and physician practices in Broome and surrounding counties.
