Learn more at www.ampunited.com Position Summary The Welder – Pipe GTAW Carbon Steel performs Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW / TIG) on carbon steel piping systems aboard U.S. Navy surface ships and submarines. Work must comply with NAVSEA S9074-AQ-GIB-010/248 (Welding and Brazing Qualification Requirements), S9074-AR-GIB-010/278 (Fabrication, Welding, and Inspection Requirements), MIL-STD-22D, and NSTM 505 (Piping Systems). Essential Duties & Responsibilities Perform GTAW (TIG) welding on carbon steel pipe and tubing in all positions (1G–6G). Prepare and fit pipe joints to specified tolerances using wedges, clamps, and strongbacks. Set up and maintain welding machines, torches, gas supplies, and purge systems per WPS requirements. Control preheats, interpass temperature, and post-weld cooling to prevent cracking and ensure metallurgical integrity. Execute root, fill, and cap passes to meet visual and NDT (VT, PT, RT) acceptance criteria. Clean, bevel, and align joints; verify fit-up dimensions and root gaps prior to welding. Inspect welds for defects such as porosity, undercut, or lack of fusion and correct as required. Maintain proper electrode and filler-metal storage, identification, and heat control. Record weld data, material traceability, and QA documentation per NAVSEA Form 142-1. Comply with Lockout/Tagout (HEC/LOTP) and safety controls during all welding activities. Support mechanical, pipe, and QA teams with system verification and turnover requirements. Participate in pre-job briefs, toolbox talks, and post-job debriefs with AMP United and NNSY supervision. Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Proficiency in GTAW (TIG) welding of carbon steel piping systems to NAVSEA standards. Ability to read and interpret WPSs, PQRs, blueprints, and piping isometrics. Knowledge of S9074-AQ-GIB-010/248, S9074-AR-GIB-010/278, MIL-STD-22D, and NSTM 505. Understanding of weld joint preparation, preheat, and interpass temperature control. Familiarity with welding symbols, inspection standards, and NDT procedures. Knowledge of NAVSEA visual inspection and acceptance criteria. Strong attention to detail, procedural compliance, and self-inspection discipline. Ability to work safely in confined, elevated, or shipboard environments. Training and Certification Requirements Pipe GTAW Carbon Steel welders must complete and maintain the following prior to assignment: NAVSEA S9074-AQ-GIB-010/248 Qualification Test Hazard Communication Respiratory Protection Confined / Enclosed Space Entry Fall Protection Lockout / Tagout (HEC / LOTP) Fire Watch / Tank Watch Lead and Chromium (VI) Awareness Shipyard Mandatory Annual Training First Aid / CPR certification Security and Access Requirements Must be a U.S. Citizen and pass all background, drug, and security checks. Must possess or obtain a Secret Clearance. Education and Experience High school diploma or GED required. Completion of a formal welding apprenticeship, military training, or trade school program preferred. Minimum four (4) years of verifiable industrial or shipyard welding experience, including two (2) years performing GTAW carbon steel pipe welding on U.S. Navy vessels. Ability to pass NAVSEA CREAS 6G GTAW Carbon Steel testing required. Experience in SMAW and GMAW processes beneficial. Working knowledge of QA documentation and NDT coordination required. Physical Requirements Ability to lift 50 lbs. and manipulate welding equipment and pipe assemblies for extended periods. Prolonged standing, kneeling, and bending in confined spaces and elevated areas. Must wear required PPE (welding hood, FR clothing, safety shoes, gloves, eye / ear protection, harness, and respirator). Tolerance for heat, noise, and shipboard environmental conditions.
