Resident Advocate
Responsibilities
The Resident Advocate plays a critical role in advancing the agency’s mission by providing compassionate, survivor-centered support to individuals impacted by domestic violence. Through crisis response, emotional support, and individualized advocacy, the Resident Advocate helps ensure the safety, dignity, and well-being of all shelter residents and their children while fostering a safe, supportive environment that promotes healing, empowerment, and self-determination.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
Hotline & Crisis Response
Answer the 24/7 domestic violence crisis hotline in a professional, trauma-informed, and survivor-centered manner.
Conduct crisis intervention, safety planning, and emotional support for callers experiencing domestic violence, sexual assault, or related crises.
Complete hotline screenings, including lethality and risk assessments, to determine immediate safety needs and appropriate referrals.
Provide accurate information about shelter services, community resources, and legal options while maintaining survivor autonomy.
Maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to all federal (VAWA), state, and agency confidentiality requirements.
Education & Experience
High school diploma or GED
Understanding and/or ability to learn domestic violence dynamics
Investment in the empowerment philosophy
Ability to work with diverse populations
Skills & Other Requirements
Ability to multitask effectively while remaining calm and responsive in crisis situations
Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks based on urgency and level of need
Strong conflict resolution and problem-solving skills
Strong organizational and time-management abilities
Basic computer proficiency, including accurate data entry and documentation
Knowledge of Allegan County and surrounding community resources, or the ability to quickly learn and make appropriate referrals
Ability and willingness to attend the required four-day MCEDSV training
Must successfully pass a criminal background check
Working Conditions
This position is performed at a locked facility
Sylvia’s Place is a 24 hour, 365 day operation
Part time 20-32 hours per week; Full time potential if available
Flexible scheduling: Shifts may vary between 1st, 2nd, and/or 3rd
Must be available to work weekends
Position funded by VOCA, Miscellaneous Grants, and/or General Funding
Job Types: Full-time, Part-time
Pay: From $14.00 per hour
