Responsibilities The Resident Advocate plays a critical role in advancing the agency’s mission by providing compassionate, survivor-centered support to individuals impacted by domestic violence. Through crisis response, emotional support, and individualized advocacy, the Resident Advocate helps ensure the safety, dignity, and well-being of all shelter residents and their children while fostering a safe, supportive environment that promotes healing, empowerment, and self-determination. Job Duties and Responsibilities Hotline & Crisis Response  Answer the 24/7 domestic violence crisis hotline in a professional, trauma-informed, and survivor-centered manner.  Conduct crisis intervention, safety planning, and emotional support for callers experiencing domestic violence, sexual assault, or related crises.  Complete hotline screenings, including lethality and risk assessments, to determine immediate safety needs and appropriate referrals.  Provide accurate information about shelter services, community resources, and legal options while maintaining survivor autonomy.  Maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to all federal (VAWA), state, and agency confidentiality requirements. Education & Experience  High school diploma or GED  Understanding and/or ability to learn domestic violence dynamics  Investment in the empowerment philosophy  Ability to work with diverse populations Skills & Other Requirements  Ability to multitask effectively while remaining calm and responsive in crisis situations  Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks based on urgency and level of need  Strong conflict resolution and problem-solving skills  Strong organizational and time-management abilities  Basic computer proficiency, including accurate data entry and documentation  Knowledge of Allegan County and surrounding community resources, or the ability to quickly learn and make appropriate referrals  Ability and willingness to attend the required four-day MCEDSV training  Must successfully pass a criminal background check Working Conditions  This position is performed at a locked facility  Sylvia’s Place is a 24 hour, 365 day operation  Part time 20-32 hours per week; Full time potential if available  Flexible scheduling: Shifts may vary between 1st, 2nd, and/or 3rd  Must be available to work weekends  Position funded by VOCA, Miscellaneous Grants, and/or General Funding Job Types: Full-time, Part-time Pay: From $14.00 per hour Benefits: Flexible schedule Paid time off People with a criminal record are encouraged to apply Work Location: In person
