Adoption Counselor
JOB SUMMARY
The Adoption Counselor position is an integral part of our mission by promoting the humane treatment of companion animals through protection, placement, education, and example. This position is a vital part of our Shelter.
Adoption Counselors must be self-motivated, team players, dependable, able to multi-task, and enjoy caring for animals! The Adoption Counselor works hands on with resident animals and with customers that visit Dorchester Paws. The Adoption Counselor is responsible for the general care and maintenance of all animals at Dorchester Paws facility.
JOB DUTIES
Support Dorchester Paws in daily functions including the general care and
maintenance of the facility and all animals
Rinse, scrub, and disinfect animal cages and outdoor runs, hallways, floors, walls and
isolation/quarantine areas, transport carriers, etc.
Engage with the public to introduce potential adopters to animals, perform meet-
and-greets between adopter owned dogs and “shelter” dogs, process adoptions, and
answer phone inquiries, intake animals
Maintain accurate animal records by entering data to administration system, taking
animal photos, and tracking animal inventories
Train and monitor volunteer activities within your area of responsibility
Walk and exercise animals to maintain their physical and mental health
Feed and water animals according to schedules and feeding instructions
Perform general cleaning duties such as facility laundry and washing animal bowls
Walks through the kennel areas checking each animal individually for any abnormal
activity such as vomiting, diarrhea, or blood in the cage
Monitor and Record food and water consumptions
Conduct meet and greet with public and shelter animals for potential adopters.
Collect, prepare, maintain, and record animal information, such as weight, size,
physical condition, treatments received, medications given, and food intake
Bring animals to and from the kennel during cleaning procedures
Clean up after animals both inside the facility and outside, and clean animal runs,
and cages as needed.
Process adoption paperwork for adopters
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other
organizations, and public
Maintain the shelter by performing tasks including, but not limited to,
sweeping/mopping floors, wiping counters, taking out trash, cleaning bathrooms,
and checking equipment and supplies
Assist other staff members on occasion with such tasks as helping restrain an animal,
helping clients with their pets, etc.
Perform other duties as assigned
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This job functions both indoors and outdoors of the shelter. Duties will take place at Dorchester Paws that require consistent walking and outdoor related work tasks. This role routinely uses cleaning supplies and equipment. This role requires regular and extended standing and walking. This role requires flexibility and the ability to stand, lift, stoop, kneel, crouch, bend or stand as necessary. This position also requires frequent lifting or moving of objects or materials up to 50lbs. No extended travel is expected for this position. Any additional traveling may be required and are within a 16 mile radius from the main company facility.

Ability to work well with cats and dogs
This position requires many detailed tasks and multi-tasking abilities
Must be able to work effectively in a team environment
Must be flexible and be able to communicate with other team members proficiently
