Title: American Sign Language Interpreter Length of assignment: Shift: Minimum guarantee: Location: Position Type: SPED: Classified Positions / Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program Summary: This position interprets for hearing-impaired students using various sign systems, such as PSE, SEE, and/or ASL. Responsibilities include facilitating communication between hearing-impaired students and teachers and hearing students in a classroom setting, and providing interpreting services at school assemblies and other special events. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:Accompany hearing-impaired students to classes; interpret teacher instructions and lectures using sign language.Ensure student understanding of teacher communication; repeat interpretation as requested.Interpret auditory responses and communications by other students or presenters.Facilitate student understanding of group interaction.Interpret soundtracks from films and tapes.Voice interpret signed responses for teachers or hearing students as needed.Assist teachers in understanding verbal responses from students.Communicate with teachers regarding student progress and concerns.Interpret school events such as assemblies, field trips, and special events.Interpret during meetings, conferences, or testing when required.Interpret informal conversations between students and staff during unstructured time as needed. Other ResponsibilitiesServe as a member of the District Interpreter Services team.Perform related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position. Education and Experience:High School Diploma or equivalentTwo (2) years of experience interpreting for the Deaf Preferred QualificationsTwo (2) years of college-level courseworkCompletion of a two-year sign language interpreter training programCertification by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) with CI/CT certification, or Level 4 or 5 from NADEducational interpreting experience Knowledge OfRole of an Educational Interpreter within the educational teamDeaf cultureSchool board policies and procedures Ability ToUse ASL, SEE, and PSE effectivelyOrganize and perform job responsibilities independentlyPay close attention to detailSpeak, read, and follow written and verbal instructionsMaintain safety and security within work routinesBuild positive relationships with staff and service providersWork collaboratively and promote teamworkMaintain confidentiality and professional conductInteract effectively with parents, staff, students, and the public in a multicultural environmentPerform job responsibilities with or without reasonable accommodation Physical DemandsFrequent sitting up to 30 minutesFrequent handling/graspingNear and far vision requiredAbility to stand, walk, lift, bend, squat, and kneelLift up to 10 lbs frequently, 25 lbs occasionally, and 50 lbs rarely Work Environment90% indoor, 10% outdoorExposure to noise, weather, and infectious diseasesMay assist with unruly or volatile studentsProtective equipment required as directed Work ScheduleTypically school days, with occasional evenings for events #ZRHC
