Scientist
Job Summary
The Scientist's role encompasses researching, developing, formulating, and testing topical skincare products within both cosmetic and over-the-counter drug categories, such as deodorants, antiperspirants, lip balms, and emulsions. This person will research emerging trends and marketed brands, evaluate current and new cosmetic ingredients and experiment with laboratory scale batches of cosmetic formulas. Their aim will be to attain specific attributes like color, texture, appearance, fragrance, and application method, while also meeting necessary specifications such as active ingredient concentrations for sunscreens and skin protectants.
Duties and Responsibilities
Keep current with industry research and innovations on skincare emulsions, deodorants, AP, lip balms.
Formulate both cosmetic and OTC formulas with active ingredients, specifically SPF based products.
Research trending product benefits and incorporate into new products.
Evaluate and adjust ingredient levels to achieve formula and aesthetic objectives.
Provide tactical guidance for design control, process validations and release criteria for new product introductions.
Monitor, test and inspect prototypes and finished goods for quality and safety as well as meet specified standards.
Compound bench samples of cosmetic formulas and fill into containers for evaluation.
Run stability tests on new formulas.
Work with Process Engineering to transfer new products to Production in accordance with approved data and established quality criteria.
Documents, summarizes, and delivers data promptly, ensuring its robustness and reliability for confident use by the project team.
Understands the patent system and effectively employs it to safeguard the business, while also being aware of the project's intellectual property (IP) strategy.
Communicates findings with the supervisor and comprehends the implications of their results in relation to project objectives, fostering expertise and confidence in making suggestions for next steps.
Acquires expertise in company culture, resources, and processes, demonstrating competence in standard operating procedures and methodologies.
Encourages safety practices and adheres to the PPE policy.
Education and Experience:
A Bachelor of Science degree, preferably in chemistry, is preferred.
0 - 5 years R&D laboratory and product development experience in a manufacturing environment.
Knowledge of cosmetic laboratory formulation practices such as researching formula chemistry, batch monitoring and stability studies.
Familiarity with the scientific method and proficiency in experiment design.
Working knowledge of WORD and EXCEL.

Understanding of typical R&D equipment and technology utilized in creating OTC, active ingredients and SPF formulas.
