Job TitleSupports teachers in applying English language development standards and practices to enhance English proficiency and facilitate content learning.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesMaintains professional competencies and continuous improvement through in-service education and other professional growth activities as required or assigned.
Participates in coaching, training, and activities to acquire and implement instructional coaching practices with classroom and ESL teachers.
Works collaboratively with other members of the school faculty to implement, strengthen, and support language-rich instruction and intervention.
Implements and demonstrates how to integrate English language development standards with state and local curriculum guides.
Utilizes language screening, state language assessment results, and other available data to prioritize language goals and help classroom and ESL teachers plan English language instruction for all language domains.
Collaborates with classroom teachers, administrators, and other appropriate staff to develop and assist in the implementation of the Individual-English Language Plans (I-ELP).
Works collaboratively with other members of the school faculty to monitor, analyze, and use data daily in all tiers of instruction to assist in making decisions for improved teaching and learning.
Meets with teachers and other professionals as deemed appropriate to discuss the individual needs of students.
Participates and contributes to school-level planning, faculty meetings, school data meetings, MTSS process, IEP meetings, and other student plans as appropriate.
Uses age-appropriate instructional strategies in all tiers of instruction to improve student achievement and integrate the state-adopted English language proficiency standards.
Demonstrates the ability to help teachers decide on the best use of methods and materials to help English Learners understand and utilize content presented, while developing language skills to communicate information, ideas, and concepts necessary for academic success in core content areas (math, science, language arts, and social science).
Utilizes a variety of coaching strategies to differentiate support via grade-level meetings, departmental meetings, and vertical team meetings. Moreover, individual and peer coaching will be an integral part of instructional support.
Uses a collaborative approach to determine, design, and deliver professional development.
Leads faculty training and provides recommendations on instructional strategies for aiding students in accessing content standards while learning English.
Uses computers, audio-visual aids, and other equipment and materials to supplement presentations.
Demonstrates depth of content knowledge and a strong commitment to the improvement of teaching practices.
Participates in school co-curricular programs and district program improvement efforts.
Demonstrates a high degree of professionalism and ethics, and works cooperatively with the Board, Superintendent, administrators, supervisors, board employees, parents, and students.
Demonstrates qualities of patience, understanding, trustworthiness and attention to work. Models appropriate personal characteristics and work habits that are consistent with personal development goals established for students.
Exhibits effective communication skills.
Maintains accurate and complete records as required by law, board policy, and/or administrators/supervisors.
Submits records and reports in a timely manner.
Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local board policy, state and federal rules/regulations, the Alabama Educator Code of Ethics, and other pertinent authority.
Travels between buildings.

Qualifications/Licenses/CertificationsA Master's degree or higher in English for Speakers of Other Languages, TESOL, Differentiation, or a related field.
A valid Alabama State teaching certificate.
Formal or intensive in-service training related to English language development and instructional practices for English learners.
Minimum 5 years of successful teaching experience with multilingual learners.
Language SkillsAbility to read, analyze, and interpret teacher textbooks, electronic media, general periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of students, parents, and the general public.
Mathematical SkillsAbility to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.
Reasoning AbilityAbility to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Physical DemandsWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and infrequently lift and/or move up to 35 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work EnvironmentThe noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

We need verification of previous public school teaching experience. Use the following information when requesting verification of experience from your past employment at other boards of education:
Within the state of Alabama, experience must be verified on Supplement EXP
Outside the state of Alabama, we must have a letter (on school district letterhead) or public school district form showing beginning and ending dates stating your years of service and position held while employed
Credit is awarded for public school experience only, private, parochial, or similar experience will not be accepted
Experience must be full time at least 50%-100% of the academic year
Administrative credit will be awarded only for experience in the same position, i.e., principal for principal position as stated in the salary schedule
Transfer Sick Leave: If you have sick leave from another state school system or from another state of Alabama agency, you must have a Sick Leave Transfer form sent from your previous employer to our Human Resources department
The Decatur City Board of Education awards a salary based on the highest degree earned, even if the degree is outside education. The degree must be verified on an official transcript & recognized by the Alabama State Department of Education.
