Electrical Engineer II

ABOUT US Midé is a research and development company focused on sensors, smart materials, and driving innovative products for our parent company Hutchinson, a major supplier for automotive, aerospace, defense and industrial markets. Midé’s R&D will help Hutchinson work toward vehicle electrification and distributed industrial sensing, especially industrial internet of things (lloT) solutions. We have a wide range of projects ranging from innovative uses of smart materials to data acquisition and signal analysis software. We combine a small company flexibility with a large company’s stability, making us a great place to learn and a place that rewards people who have drive and their own ideas. SUMMARY The focus of this position is analog and printed circuit board (PCB) design, with an emphasis on low power consumption. The engineer will work with more senior teammates to design circuits for sensing, data storage/transmission, and energy harvesting within microcontroller-based systems. We do not expect candidates to be an expert in these areas, but some prior knowledge or experience will be helpful. This position will also reach into more standard low power digital hardware designs and depending on the engineer’s interest it can involve RF design, firmware, or piezoelectric mechanical simulation and design. EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE BSE (EE, ECE, CS, or similar) required Masters Preferred 2+ years analog or hardware design experience required REQUIREMENTS Candidates must have: Must be a US person (citizen or permanent resident) Circuit design and PCB layout experience including both analog and digital systems. Demonstrable knowledge of analog design fundamentals such as impedances, sensor interfaces, active/passive filtering, and op-amp circuits. Experience with circuit verification testing and debug skills for low noise circuitry Experience simulating analog circuits using SPICE Some experience with either Python or embedded C Effective verbal and written communication skills Effective electronics analysis and design skills Self-motivated individual capable of collaborating with various functional groups (e.g. mechanical/firmware/product engineering and manufacturing) to ensure design requirements are met. HIGHLY PREFERRED The following areas are important and will be used in this position’s projects over the next year. The ideal candidate will have experience in some of these areas, but we will not reject candidates for lack of experience in these areas: Experience with piezoelectric materials for sensing, actuation, or energy harvesting. Experience with low current sensors, such as piezoelectric amplifiers. Experience with hardware or firmware for low power designs. Experience designing analog circuitry for measurement systems. Experience collaborating with mechanical engineers to ensure electromechanical design requirements are met. Schematic and/or layout experience with Altium Designer Some proficiency with Ansys or other simulation software Rapid PCB prototyping and ability to solder miniature components to 0402 level. PCA rework skills are desirable. Ability to propose and implement electronics component changes related to obsolescence and supply chain shortages on existing designs. PREFERRED SKILLS The following areas represent where the candidate could grow over the long term. Candidates with experience in one or more areas are preferred: Experience or an interest in managing engineering projects. Design experience with power management for low power devices. This includes linear & switching voltage regulation and battery management systems. Experience interfacing with electronics contract manufacturing, and creation of electronics documentation (e.g. Bill of Materials, Gerber files, PCB and PCA fabrication drawings, etc.). Experience with microcontroller hardware design, ensuring communication bus (e.g. USB, SPI, I2C, UART) and other peripheral requirements are met (e.g. ADC, DAC, GPIO). High density BGA layout skills are desirable. Experience with RF designs. Experience with accelerometers, gyroscopes, or IMUs. Signal processing knowledge using tools such as Fourier Transforms, PSDs, filters, and resampling. Experience with GPS or wireless systems (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ZigBee/other 802.15.4, ANT etc.). Experience with firmware, particularly C on an ARM processor or using the Espressif toolchain. Using FW debuggers and/or logic analyzers to troubleshoot existing microcontroller systems. Experience programming in Python. Equal Opportunity Employer – minorities/females/veterans/individuals with disabilities/sexual orientation/gender identity. XJ6
