Scientist in Synthetic Organic Chemistry
Position Overview
BLD Pharmatech Co., Limited, a leading manufacturer and supplier of research chemicals, is seeking a Scientist in Synthetic Organic Chemistry to join its U.S. R&D team in Newington, Connecticut. This role is intended for PhD-trained chemists with strong expertise in synthetic organic chemistry and an interest in developing scalable, efficient, and robust chemical processes.
The Scientist will design, optimize, and scale synthetic routes, contribute to process development strategy, and provide technical support to junior researchers while contributing to coordinated project execution within the process chemistry group.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct comprehensive literature and patent reviews to inform process route selection, risk assessment, and experimental planning aligned with project objectives.
Design, develop, and execute scalable multi-step synthetic routes, typically at the 10–100 g scale or larger, with emphasis on robustness, safety, and reproducibility.
Optimize reaction parameters (e.g., solvent, temperature, stoichiometry, reagent addition, and workup) to improve yield, selectivity, throughput, and process reliability.
Evaluate and implement process improvements, including alternative reagents, catalysts, and conditions, to enhance scalability, efficiency, and consistency.
Purify and isolate intermediates and final products using process-appropriate techniques such as crystallization, phase separations, and chromatography when required.
Perform and interpret analytical characterization (NMR, MS, HPLC, GC, KF, etc.) to confirm structure, purity, and batch-to-batch consistency.
Maintain thorough, accurate, and compliant laboratory documentation, including laboratory notebooks and technical reports, ensuring data integrity and traceability.
Provide technical guidance and day-to-day support to junior researchers, including assistance with experimental planning, execution, and data interpretation.
Coordinate research activities within small project teams to support timelines, priorities, and quality expectations.
Contribute scientific insight and practical input to process development discussions and project planning.
Ensure all laboratory activities comply with applicable safety, quality, and regulatory standards.
Remain current with advances in process chemistry, scalable synthesis methodologies, and green chemistry principles, and apply best practices to ongoing research.
Qualifications
PhD in Organic Chemistry, Process Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, or a closely related field (required).
Strong theoretical and practical background in reaction mechanisms, synthetic strategy, and process route development.
Demonstrated hands-on experience with multi-step synthesis, reaction optimization, and laboratory-scale process development.
Familiarity with process-relevant purification strategies, including crystallization development and chromatography.
Proven proficiency in analytical data interpretation, including NMR, MS, HPLC, and GC.
Experience supporting or mentoring junior researchers in an academic or industrial laboratory environment.
Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
Strong scientific judgment, problem-solving skills, and attention to experimental detail.
Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to document procedures and communicate technical concepts effectively.
