Description: Role: Laboratory Support Specialist SupervisorDepartment: Specimen Receiving Levels: n/aStatus: Exempt, Full-TimeLocation: On-Site: Overland Park, KSManages Others: YesPrepared Date: 01/19/2026Revised Date: 01/19/2026Basic Function and Scope of Responsibility:The Specimen Receiving Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the specimen receiving area, ensuring accurate and timely processing of incoming specimens. This role supports the Specimen Receiving Manager by supervising staff, maintaining compliance with regulatory standards, and optimizing workflow efficiency.Essential Job Duties:Supervise specimen receiving activities, including intake, verification, labeling, and distribution to testing departments. Coach and hold team members accountable when areas of improvement are identifiedAccurate receiving, ordering, and handling of specimens Supervise the accurate handling of send out testingProvide prompt and accurate resolution for client service and medical records issues, including follow-up with stakeholders, where applicableAssist with implementation and maintenance of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for specimen receiving and handling, sendouts, and Problem Sample Resolution. Act as a liaison with courier services to resolve issues and arrange servicesEnsure Adherence to established SOPs and quality standardsDemonstrate effective teamwork skills by sharing information and encouraging input from othersSupport inspection readiness and compliance with all applicable regulatory requirementsAssist the manager with the Quality Management program including NCE and CAPA and identify the need for and champion RCA, when applicableMaintain a standard of cleanliness and safety in work area Provide training and competency assessment for staff and provide constructive feedback when team members need additional supportOther duties as assigned Requirements: Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:High school Diploma requiredAssociate’s degree in biology or equivalent combination of education and experience preferredLaboratory pre-analytical experience: Minimum of 4 yearsAbility to solve problems, prioritize and multi-task in a deadline driven environmentStrong analytical skills, meticulous documentation skills, ability to follow established procedures, and experience with relevant software.Maintains patient confidentiality.Provides coaching and mentoring to staffComplete annual reviewsComplete timecards and payroll timelyAssists with accessioning specimens or problem sample resolution Understanding of applicable regulatory requirementsWilling to work with potentially infectious human blood and body fluidsRequires flexibility in schedule, working hours and days (potentially including weekends) outside of normal schedule when necessaryGoal oriented, with excellent time management and organizational skillsExcellent interpersonal skills, with ability to interact effectively and work efficiently with people at all levels in an organizationAbility to pivot to meet to meet the needs of the businessFamiliarity with medical terminologyAbility to operate multiple systems at one timeMaintains professional attitudeExcellent verbal & written communication skillsAbility to keep sensitive information confidentialHigh level of proficiency with PC based software programsAbility to make independent decisions in matters of significanceOther duties as assigned by managementPhysical Requirements:Physical dexterity sufficient to use hands, arms, and shoulders repetitively to operate a keyboard and other office equipment, use a telephone, access file cabinets or refrigerators/freezers, and other items stored at various levels, including overheadAbility to speak and hear well enough to communicate clearly and understandably with sufficient volume to ensure an accurate exchange of information in normal conversational distance, over the telephone, and in a group settingAbility to stand for extended periods of time as necessaryAbility to lift and move items weighing up to 20 poundsPhysical dexterity sufficient to move body frequently around equipmentAbility to continuously operate a personal computer for extended periods of time Mental acuity sufficient to collect and interpret data, evaluate, reason, define problems, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, make valid judgments and decisionsThe essential physical and mental requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
