Senior PostgreSQL Database Administrator

Job Summary Our Energy and Utilities Client is looking for a PostgreSQL Database Administrator (AWS Cloud & Migration Specialist) with 12+ years of database administration experience to Migrate and support mission-critical database environments across on-premises and AWS cloud platforms. The ideal candidate will be responsible for the administration, performance tuning, security, backup and recovery, high availability, automation, and migration of PostgreSQL databases. This role requires deep expertise in PostgreSQL database administration along with strong hands-on experience in AWS services, Infrastructure as Code (Terraform), AWS CLI automation, monitoring, and large-scale database migration initiatives, including Oracle to AWS RDS/Aurora PostgreSQL ,sqlserver to AWS RDS/Aurora PostgresSQL and On-Premises PostgreSQL to AWS RDS/Aurora PostgreSQL. The successful candidate will work closely with application teams, infrastructure teams, cloud architects, and project stakeholders to ensure highly available, secure, and performant database environments.  This position is W-2 only. We do not work with third-party firms or C2C arrangements for this role. Core ResponsibilitiesSenior PostgreSQL Database Administrator (AWS Cloud & Migration Specialist)Develop and maintain disaster recovery procedures and documentationEnsure adherence to RTO/RPO requirements and business continuity standardsDesign, implement, and support High Availability (HA) and disaster recovery architecturesMonitor replication health, troubleshoot synchronization issues, and optimize replication performanceExecute failover, switchover, and recovery activities with minimal downtimeDesign and support highly available PostgreSQL architectures across on-premises and AWS cloud environmentsMonitor, analyze, and optimize database performance using AWS-native monitoring toolsImplement database security controls, encryption, auditing, and compliance best practicesCreate and maintain operational dashboards, performance reports, and key metrics for database operations and service healthPerform Oracle-to-PostgreSQL assessments, schema conversions, compatibility analysis, and performance optimizationSupport PostgreSQL version upgrades, platform migrations, and cloud modernization initiativesExecute end-to-end migration activities including assessment, planning, testing, cutover, validation, and post-migration supportRequired Skills/Experience (Must-Haves)Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or related field12+ years of Database Administration experience8+ years of PostgreSQL Database Administration experience5+ years of AWS & Azure cloud database administration experienceStrong experience managing mission-critical production databasesProven experience with PostgreSQL upgrades, migrations, and performance tuningStrong troubleshooting and problem-solving skillsExcellent verbal and written communication skillsAWS Certified Database SpecialtyAWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate/ProfessionalPostgreSQL Professional CertificationPreferred Skills/Experience (Nice-to-Haves)Experience with Enterprise Monitoring toolsExperience supporting large-scale utility, financial or regulated environmentsExperience with DevOps and CI/CD pipelinesKnowledge of Kubernetes and containerized PostgreSQL environmentsExperience with pgBouncer, Pgpool-II, Patroni, or similar PostgreSQL HA solutionsKey Competencies & BehaviorsMaintain highly available, secure, and scalable PostgreSQL database environmentsDeliver optimized database performance, reliability, and operational excellenceImplement automated monitoring, alerting, reporting, and operational processesEnsure disaster recovery readiness, backup compliance, and adherence to RTO/RPO requirementsDrive infrastructure automation and cloud adoption using Terraform and AWS servicesSuccessfully execute database migration projects with minimal downtime and business impactWork EnvironmentLocation: Oakland, CAHybrid: Work Model: Hybrid - onsite 3 or more days/week, as neededAnchor days: Tue/Wed/Thu - Work Hours: 8:30am - 5:00pm CSTCompensation & BenefitsPay Range: The approximate pay rate for this position is between $60.00 and $70.00. Please note that the pay range provided is a good faith estimate. Final compensation may vary based on factors including but not limited to background, knowledge, skills, and location.
