SUMMARY:
The Civil Carpenter is responsible for constructing, erecting, repairing, and dismantling built-in-place or prefabricated forms for concrete structures or foundations, pouring, and finishing concrete, in a safe and quality manner.
The Carpenter shall work as such until the appropriate time has occurred that the necessary knowledge and experience, by testing and certification, have been met to enable the Carpenter to advance.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Construction and installation of concrete and fireproofing forms.
Spread, level, and smooth concrete, using rake, shovel, hand or power trowel, hand or power screed, and float.
Mold expansion joints and edges, using edging tools, jointers, and straightedge.
Operate power vibrator to compact concrete.
Mix cement, sand, and water to produce concrete, grout, or slurry, using hoe, trowel, tamper, scraper, or concrete-mixing machine.
Use of appropriate hand tools for soft excavation, shovel, rake, pickax, etc.
Use of a Transit Level for elevation / grade measurements
Knowledge of crane signals for movement of concrete buckets and materials
Uses tools such as a rod bender, tape plumb bob, level, and chalk line.
Use of a tape measure
Knowledge of spacing requirements
Studies construction drawings, sketches, building plans, and specifications for information pertaining to requirements and dimensions.
Prepares layouts using appropriate tools.
Fabricates materials to prescribed measurements using appropriate tools such as hand or power saws, chisels, and planes.
Material identification by type and dimension.
Use of tagline to unload materials and equipment.
Mathematic skills as they pertain to job activities.
Knowledge of construction terminology.
Read and understand the work permits.
Pouring and finishing of concrete.
Basic rigging knowledge
Maintains a clean and orderly work environment and maintains housekeeping of job site.
Returns all tools and materials used by the crew to the proper place at the end of shift.
Must fully participate in the safety assessment of the job and completion of JSA’s.
Fully participate in health, safety, quality, and environmental processes.
Leadership and training responsibilities
Provide leadership and knowledge to employees in lower classifications.
Not only works well as part of a team but promotes team values for others.
Must be willing to contribute to the development of other employees, including on the job training for Rod busters, Carpenter helpers, and Laborers.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
Willing to meet Starcon and client background, drug, and alcohol testing requirements
May be required to pass physical examination, pre-employment if necessary, and as required by STARCON.
Ability to understand and maintain compliance with all Starcon and clients’ safety and quality control procedures.
Work alongside all team members in order to reach a common goal and may be required from time to time to perform other duties that they are qualified to perform, outside of his or her normal job function.
Must be able to climb ladders and stairways.
Must be able to carry 50 lbs. of tools and/or materials.
Must be able to work at elevated heights as well as in confined spaces (towers, vessels, excavations, etc.).
Must be able to work extended hour on your feet on uneven surfaces (dirt, concrete, asphalt, mud, gravel, etc.).
Must be able to pass applicable site-specific training.
Knowledge of refinery and Chemical plant hazards (that may require special precautions and PPE) such as Sulfuric, H2S.
Must undertake the appropriate safety or environmental training to commensurate with the position and location.
Must be able to read and understand safety instructions, signs, labels, and permits in English.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work environment may at times require you to work in SCBA, special protective PPE specific to the unit and working at heights. Extended work hours may be required. Exposure to outdoor weather conditions and elements. Must be physically able to carry up to 50 lbs. of tools and/or material. The worksite is located at a local Oil Refinery; travel will not be required.
