Nonprofit Finance Director

Job Title: Finance ManagerReports to: Executive DirectorLocation: Hybrid - SW Portland & remote 1 day per weekThe OpportunityThe Director of Finance is responsible for overseeing the financial health, integrity, and sustainability of the organization. This role provides strategic leadership in financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and reporting, while ensuring compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, regulatory requirements, and grant and donor restrictions. The Director of Finance manages the finance team and partners closely with the Executive Director, senior leadership, and the Board of Directors to support informed decision-making and advance the organization’s mission. We have been engaging in anti-poverty work for 120 years, offering a safety net to ensure that our community has the support they need to thrive.Key ResponsibilitiesFinancial StrategyProvide strategic financial leadership to the senior leadership and the Board of Directors to support the organization’s mission and long-term sustainabilityPartner with senior leadership and the Board of Directors on cash and asset management strategyAccounting/Cash Flow OversightOversee day-to-day accounting operations and ensure accurate, timely financial reportingSupervise finance staff and/or external accounting vendorsManage cash flowBudgeting and ReportingLead annual budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processesReview account reconciliations, journal entries, and financial reports ensuring compliance with GAAP and nonprofit standards.Review, analyze, and present monthly/quarterly financial reports to department managers, senior leadership and the Board of DirectorsFinancial Policies and ComplianceManage internal controlsOversee creation/review/revision/implementation of financial policies and proceduresEnsure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, grant requirements, and regulatory obligationsOversee grant and restricted fund trackingLead annual audit and coordinate preparation of Form 990 and other required filingsPartnershipsMaintain strong customer service relationships with all internal and external stakeholdersAdvise and support program managers on revenue growth strategy, funding acquisition, funder reporting, and grant complianceTraining and DocumentationDevelop and deliver training sessions for budget managers on budgeting, analysis, financial tools and processes. Foster and support knowledge sharing within the finance team and across departments.Technology and Data SystemsRegularly assess and improve financial systems and processes to support organizational effectivenessOversee technology planning, including data systems development, data risk management, and equipment managementLeadership & SupervisionSupervise the Finance Manager and Facilities/Operations Manager, including planning and directing work, training, and performance managementProvide guidance and mentorship to team members to enhance their skills and performanceRegularly review performance and goal setting of direct reportsRequirementsBachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field requiredMinimum of 5 years of progressive financial management experience, preferably in a nonprofit organization5 years supervisory experienceDemonstrated experience with nonprofit accounting, budgeting, and financial reportingExperience managing grants, restricted funds, and funder compliance requirementsProven experience leading audits and working with external auditorsExperience presenting financial information to senior leadership and boards of directorsWorking knowledge of IT systemsRequired SkillsStrong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles, including fund and restricted-fund accountingProven experience in budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysisAbility to prepare and interpret accurate financial statements and management reportsExperience managing audits, internal controls, and regulatory compliance (including IRS Form 990)Demonstrated expertise in grant and contract financial management and reportingStrong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detailAbility to translate complex financial information for non-financial staff, leadership, and board membersProven leadership and staff management skills, including supervision and team developmentHigh ethical standards and commitment to transparency and accountabilityProficiency with accounting software and advanced spreadsheet tools (e.g., Excel)Proficiency in presentation software (PowerPoint, Canva)Proficiency in data systems, file managementStrong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlinesExcellent written and verbal communication skillsPreferred QualificationsMaster’s degree (MBA, MPA, or MS in Finance/Accounting) preferredCPA or CMA certification preferredBenefitsNeighborhood House offers full-time employees a comprehensive benefits package, including:Generous PTO and 12 paid holidaysAffordable health insurance with 95% of the cost paid by NH403b retirement planCompany-paid life insurance.
