Overview
Join The Washington Post as a Full Stack Software Engineer on the Subscriptions team. You’ll build customer-facing web experiences and contribute across the full stack, delivering reliable features that power our subscription products. You’ll work with React, Java, and Node.js, in a cloud and monorepo environment, collaborating with cross-functional teams to drive scalable, accessible web experiences. You’ll also leverage AI-assisted engineering to improve development and production readiness. This is a chance to help reinvent news with impact-driven, high-quality software.

ResponsibilitiesDesign, build, test, deploy, and operate customer-facing subscription experiences using React and TypeScriptContribute to frontend decisions around component design, state management, performance, accessibility, testing, and maintainabilityDevelop and integrate backend services and APIs (primarily Java), and contribute to Node.js tooling and automationOwn features from implementation through deployment, observability, production support, and continuous improvementWork in monorepo-based codebases, contributing to shared libraries and build toolingContribute to AWS infrastructure, CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, and developer tooling for reliable deliverySupport engineering platforms and services such as Jenkins and AirflowParticipate in on-call rotation for incident response and follow-up improvementsCollaborate with engineers, product partners, and stakeholders to clarify requirements and tradeoffsUse AI across the engineering lifecycle to enhance coding, testing, debugging, and automationCommunicate progress, risks, and dependencies clearly and proactively
Key requirementsBA/BS in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent practical experience2+ years of professional software engineering experience2+ years frontend development experience with React and modern JavaScript/TypeScriptExperience building or integrating backend services and APIs (preferably Java)Experience with Node.js in services, APIs, automation, or toolingStrong understanding of frontend fundamentals (component design, state, performance, accessibility, testing, responsive design)Experience with monorepos and shared libraries or toolingFamiliarity with AWS, CI/CD, and production observabilityExperience troubleshooting and supporting production applicationsAbility to deliver well-defined features independently; strong communication skillsExperience using AI-assisted engineering toolsownership and accountabilityclear communicationcollaborationReactJavaJavaScript/TypeScript
