Position Overview The Media Technician provides critical laboratory support for AVS Bio's Avian Vaccine Services operations in Storrs, CT. This role is responsible for the preparation of media and buffers, proactive inventory management, procurement support, receiving and processing of samples, and maintaining a clean and well-organized laboratory environment. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Media & Buffer PreparationPrepare bacteriological and cell culture media, buffers, and reagent solutions in accordance with established SOPs.Perform quality checks including pH measurement, sterility testing, and visual inspection; label, date, and store all materials with accurate preparation records.Operate and maintain autoclave, pH meters, balances, and other preparation equipment; perform routine calibration and upkeep.Inventory Management & OrderingMonitor and maintain inventory levels of media, reagents, and consumables; conduct regular counts and update tracking systems.Receive, inspect, and properly store incoming shipments including samples; track expiration dates and rotate stock to minimize waste.Generate and submit purchase requisitions; communicate with vendors to track orders and resolve discrepancies. Research substitute products when needed and presents options to management.Laboratory Housekeeping & General SupportPerform daily and periodic cleaning and disinfection of benchtops, floors, and common laboratory areas.Manage laboratory glassware and plasticware: washing, sterilizing, and redistributing to appropriate workstations.Execute waste disposal in compliance with biosafety, chemical safety, and regulatory requirements.Restock consumables at workstations and assist laboratory staff with general setup and support tasks.Maintain accurate records and assist with SOP documentation for preparation and housekeeping procedures.Perform all other laboratory support duties as assigned. Qualifications Education: High school diploma or GED required. Associate's degree in Biology, Life Sciences, or a related field preferred.Experience: Prior laboratory experience preferred. Familiarity with media preparation, basic lab techniques, or inventory management is a plus. Relevant coursework or vocational training will be considered.Licensure: None required.Technical Skills: Basic math and measurement skills required. Ability to operate laboratory equipment including balances, pH meters, and autoclaves. Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel preferred.Other: Strong attention to detail and organizational skills. Ability to follow written procedures precisely and manage recurring tasks with minimal supervision. Collaborative and reliable team player. Physical Demands Regularly required to stand, walk, and use hands to handle materials and operate laboratory equipment.Must be able to regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds.Ability to bend, reach, and maneuver within laboratory and storage areas. Work Environment Laboratory environment with regular exposure to biological agents, chemicals, and cleaning agents.PPE required at all times including gloves, lab coat, and eye protection.May work near moving mechanical parts and encounter moderate noise levels. Occasional exposure to cold rooms or freezer storage areas.Occasional off-hours work may be required to support laboratory operations.We are somewhat flexible to work hours provided the candidate can execute on duties.
