This role is our first underwriting hire, and you’ll have a real seat at the table shaping how we make credit decisions from day one.The RoleThe Underwriter is a key participant in the credit decisioning process. You’ll analyze personal credit reports, business bank statements, and a range of business documentation to evaluate small business applicants, structure deals, and support our partners and customers in moving qualified opportunities to funding.Because this is our founding underwriting role, you’ll do more than review files — you’ll help us build the playbook: refining underwriting guidelines, shaping our approval matrix, and partnering directly with the founders to evolve credit policy as we grow.What You’ll DoAnalyze personal credit reports, business bank statements, background checks, and other business documentation to make sound credit recommendationsUnderwrite a variety of industries — retail, restaurants, hospitality, healthcare, construction, professional services, transportation, and moreConduct counterparty research and verify business legitimacy (KYB), ownership structure, and merchant backgroundStructure transaction terms — pricing, term length, payment frequency, and risk mitigants — to fit each merchant’s profileCommunicate clearly with ISO partners, internal sales, and merchants in both written and verbal formHelp finalize and refine underwriting policy, exclusions, scorecards, and approval matrices in partnership with the founding teamIdentify patterns in approvals and declines and recommend process or policy improvementsMaintain accurate, well-documented files in our loan management system and supporting toolsWhat We’re Looking For2+ years of underwriting experience in small business lending, MCA / revenue-based financing, working capital loans, or commercial lines of credit (strongly preferred)Demonstrated ability to read and interpret business bank statements, including identifying NSFs, true revenue, daily balances, and existing stacked positionsComfort with personal credit report analysis (FICO, tradelines, derogatories, public records)Strong written and verbal communication; able to explain credit decisions clearly to non-credit audiencesDetail-oriented, analytical, organized, and self-directed — comfortable in a high-volume, fast-paced environmentSound judgment and a strong sense of accountability; willing to defend decisions and adapt as data warrantsHigh school diploma required; bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, economics, or a related field preferredNice to HaveExperience with one or more underwriting platformsFamiliarity with KYC/KYB toolsWorking knowledge of state commercial financing disclosure requirementsMicrosoft 365 / Google Workspace fluencyWhy This Role Is DifferentThis is a founding underwriting seat at a lending startup.
