Senior Legal Counsel (Commodities Trading)

This role will serve as a key legal advisor to commodity trading, marketing, and commercial teams, providing strategic counsel on sophisticated physical and financial energy transactions. The position offers the opportunity to influence critical business decisions, negotiate complex commercial agreements, and support fast-paced trading activities in a dynamic corporate environment.ResponsibilitiesServe as the primary legal counsel supporting commodity trading, marketing, and commercial operations.Structure, draft, review, and negotiate complex commercial agreements, including ISDA, NAESB, supply, transportation, storage, and credit support agreements.Advise internal stakeholders on legal and contractual risks involving commodity trading activities, collateral structures, netting provisions, defaults, and close-out rights.Partner with commercial, risk, credit, and operations teams to ensure transactions remain executable, enforceable, and aligned with business objectives.Interpret and apply regulatory and compliance requirements impacting energy marketing and trading activities.Manage legal support staff, including assignment oversight, deliverable review, and professional development support.Coordinate external counsel on regulatory, compliance, and dispute-related matters while maintaining ownership of legal strategy.Develop and maintain standard agreements, legal playbooks, and internal guidance documents supporting trading activities.Provide timely legal support for high-volume transactional matters in a fast-paced business environment.QualificationsJuris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited U.S. law school.Active license in good standing with the Texas State Bar.Minimum 7–10 years of legal experience supporting energy, commodities, or complex commercial transactions.Prior in-house counsel or law firm experience supporting trading or commercial organizations preferred.Experience advising commodity trading, marketing, or commercial teams in a transactional environment.Strong knowledge of commercial agreements, credit support structures, and commodity trading documentation.Working knowledge of corporate law and legal procedures.Experience negotiating ISDA, NAESB, supply, transportation, storage, and related commercial agreements.Proficiency in written, verbal, telephonic, and electronic business communications.Experience using A.I. tools preferred.Ability to work independently with minimal supervision on routine legal matters.
