Observation Medicine Physician (Observationist)Our organization | Hagerstown, MDAttractive Compensation Package + Potential Signing BonusPosition OverviewFocused role within a dedicated Observation Unit operating under a closed-unit model.Perfect for a Family Medicine physician who values comprehensive, protocol-based inpatient care.Oversee observation stays lasting 24-48 hours to prevent unnecessary full admissions.Strong commitment to delivering efficient, high-quality, patient-centered healthcare.Must be Board Certified or Eligible in Family Medicine.Collaborative atmosphere with support from Emergency Medicine, Hospital Medicine, and various specialties.Possibility for leadership roles, including unit leadership or medical director, for qualified candidates.Part of a growing academic health system with new medical school and residency initiatives.Clinical ResponsibilitiesThis position emphasizes high-quality, protocol-driven care within a specialized Observation Unit:Observation Unit ServicesThorough evaluation, management, and discharge planning for adult observation patients.Adhere to evidence-based protocols for prevalent conditions such as chest pain, syncope, heart failure exacerbations, COPD/asthma, cellulitis, and dehydration.Conduct histories and physical examinations, order and interpret diagnostic tests, and coordinate patient care.Collaborate closely with Emergency Medicine, specialists, and case management to ensure safe and timely discharges.Patient DemographicsFocus on adult patients requiring short-term observation (generally less than 48 hours), encompassing a wide range of conditions typically encountered in Family Medicine:Acute exacerbations of chronic illnesses (CHF, COPD, diabetes).Evaluation of chest pain and syncope.Management of infectious conditions (cellulitis, UTI, pneumonia).Assessment of minor abdominal pain, headaches, and other non-specific complaints.Care for post-procedure patients or those with transitional needs.Typical Clinical VolumeHigh-capacity observation unit with a focused patient census.Streamlined workflow prioritizing timely evaluations and patient dispositions.Balanced daily workload supported by a strong team of staff.Academic & Faculty OpportunitiesChance to educate medical students and residents through the upcoming Meritus School of Osteopathic Medicine.Engagement in quality improvement initiatives, protocol development, and scholarly activities.Work Schedule & Call RequirementsFull-time hospital-based schedule with dedicated shifts in the Observation Unit.Consistent hours focusing on daytime coverage.Shared coverage responsibilities within the Hospital Medicine and Observation teams.Comprehensive Clinical SupportDedicated nursing and support staff within the Observation Unit.Close collaboration with the Emergency Department, Hospitalists, and specialists.Multidisciplinary team approach aimed at optimizing patient flow and minimizing unnecessary hospital admissions.About Our OrganizationWe are an independent, nationally recognized regional health system dedicated to outstanding patient care, medical education, and community wellness.
