Part-Time Seasonal Educator

The Organization The enduring fame of Old North Church began on the evening of April 18, 1775, when church sexton Robert Newman and vestryman Capt. John Pulling, Jr. climbed the steeple of Old North Church and held high two lanterns as a signal from Paul Revere that the British were marching to Lexington and Concord by sea across the Charles River. This fateful event ignited the American Revolution. Old North Church is Boston’s oldest surviving church building and welcomes over 200,000 visitors each year as one of the Freedom Trail’s most popular historical sites. Old North Illuminated (ONI) inspires active citizenship and courageous, compassionate leadership by interpreting and preserving the Old North Church & Historic Site. ONI serves a wide audience by creating meaningful experiences through educational outreach, site-specific programming, and historical analysis. The Position As an Educator at Old North Church & Historic Site, you will be part of a close-knit and enthusiastic team committed to providing visitors with an enjoyable, memorable, and interesting experience. Educators will be trained to interpret the Old North Church as well as local Boston history. Educators will not to exceed 30 hours a week, although there may be an occasional opportunity to work outside those hours. This is a seasonal position currently projected to end in December 2026. While there may be a possibility for occasional shifts during the winter months, we cannot guarantee staff part-time hours beyond the end date in late December. 2026 Hours of Operations: Beginning March 1: Tuesday-Saturday 10am to 5pm and Sunday, 12:30-5pm Beginning May 24: Monday-Saturday 10am to 5pm and Sunday, 11:30am-5pm(Summer Sunday hours subject to change) Beginning November 1: Tuesday-Saturday 10am to 5pm and Sunday, 12:30-5pm The site is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. Key Responsibilities Seasonal Educators are responsible for a wide range of interpretive and operational duties, including but not limited to: Providing a warm and professional welcome to visitors and helping them understand how to navigate and experience the site Opening and closing the 300-year-old historic site Ensuring visitor safety while protecting the historic structure and its collections Answering interpretive questions about the history of Old North Church and leading brief (5–7 minute) orientation talks for scheduled group tours Leading tours of specialty areas, including the crypt, gallery, and bell-ringing chamber Assisting visitors with wayfinding, directions, and neighborhood points of interest Supporting the daily cleanliness and care of the site to maintain a tidy, welcoming environment Assisting with additional interpretive or operational duties as needed Qualifications: Qualifications & Job Requirements Successful candidates will demonstrate the following: An outgoing, engaging personality with enthusiasm for working with visitors of all ages Confidence with public speaking and group engagement Passion for history and historic preservation Ability to manage crowds and enforce site policies with professionalism and care Availability to work weekends, holidays, and special events Experience in teaching, theater, or customer service (preferred) Bilingual skills (a plus) Reliability, flexibility, and a collaborative team-oriented mindset Saturday & Thursday availability is highly desirable Physical & Technical Requirements Ability to climb narrow and steep stairs and conduct tours in confined spaces Ability to stand for extended periods of time Ability to tolerate summer temperatures in an unairconditioned historic building Ability and willingness to download and use the Slack app for work-related communication, including scheduling updates, announcements, and team coordination Required use of the Paychex app for clocking in and out How To Apply: Please send your resume and a brief cover letter to jobs@oldnorth.com Commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Access Old North Illuminated is committed to fostering a workplace and visitor experience grounded in diversity, equity, inclusion, and access.
