Area Superintendent

Primary Purpose: In general, an Area Superintendent is responsible for the management, direction, supervision, and evaluation of K - 12 schools within assigned areas of the school district. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, coaching and supervision of the area principals, and their adherence to instructional standards, curriculum assessments, and accountability measures; monitoring of appropriate school and classroom learning environments; and selection, development, and evaluation of school-based leaders.RESPONSIBILITIES:Instructional LeadershipProvides leadership that results in the achievement of the instructional goals of the school district.Collaborates with district personnel to develop, schedule, and administer professional development to positively impact student outcomes and promote research-based instructional practices.Provides leadership and support to ensure the effective implementation of the district's curriculum within assigned schools.Provides leadership and facilitates cross-departmental team collaboration to foster continuous improvement in the campus implementation of curricula, instructional best practices, and assessments in a manner that promotes attainment of district, school, and department goals.Collaborates with other area superintendents to provide horizontal and vertical instructional alignment and continuity among schools.Effectively communicates district policy, goals, and guidelines to campus administrators, district staff and community stakeholders.School/Organizational ImprovementMaintains a focus on improving student outcomes and provides leadership to principals to maintain focus on continuous improvement.Analyzes, reflects upon, synthesizes, and contextualizes relevant data and information to form insights and drive actions.Model continuous improvement and participates in the creation, experimentation and implementation of innovative approaches that improve student learning.Supports the effective implementation of district-wide initiatives and programming.Pursues the district goal to ensure equitable access to high-quality instruction and academic and extra-curricular programming for all students thus eliminating opportunity gaps.Regularly monitors schools' performance and provides feedback to assist in developing principal leadership capacity and the schools' progress toward implementation of the Lamar CISD Strategic Plan, DIP and Campus Improvement Plan.Collaborates with district leaders to identify and prioritize needs for each school, and ensure best practices are shared across schools.Establishes high expectations and creates/maintains results-focused environment based on communicated goals.Promotes a positive, caring climate for learning.Fosters an organizational culture that embraces the importance of seeking and listening to diverse perspectives within and outside of the organization.Demonstrates skill in conflict resolution with administrators, parents, teachers, staff, and community.School/Organizational ClimateDeals sensitively and fairly with persons from diverse cultural and socioeconomic staff, the community and parents and/or students when appropriate.Personnel ManagementEngages in the selection process of new principals and assistant principals who can successfully lead school improvement efforts.Utilizes the district's appraisal instrument appropriately and ensures that the process clearly and accurately represents staff performance.Actively develops others towards goals through use of timely and constructive feedback, targeted professional learning, personalized coaching, and recognition of accomplishments and strengths.Implements routine high-quality coaching practices with campus leadership to promote practices resulting in increased student achievement.Supports principals in creating a high-performing community who leverage one another's strengths and support one another in achieving shared goals through principal meetings, peer mentoring, and/or individual job-embedded coaching focused on instructional leadership.Collaborates as needed with other departments in hiring district staff.Meets regularly with assigned staff to promote professional growth and development, discuss goals and objectives, and to collaboratively develop professional improvement plans.Promptly addresses situations, concerns, or grievances from campuses (student, parent, or employee) and works to develop solutions.Administration and Fiscal/Facilities ManagementUtilizes a budget development process that ensures that fiscal resources address the mission of the district and are aligned to organizational needs/goals.Demonstrates responsible fiscal practices over assigned program budgets.Ensures that assigned schools comply with all policies and laws, or request waivers, when applicable.Ensures responsible fiscal oversight of campus budgets and grant funds in assigned schools.Collaborates with staff to compile and report projections of personnel and facility needs.Assists in the development of educational specifications for remodeling projects and new construction as they relate to the instructional program.Participates in District committees as assigned such as attendance rezoning and bond development and planning.Student ManagementWorks with parents and campus personnel to resolve instructional/disciplinary conflicts.Conducts conferences with parents, students and principals concerning school and student issues.Supports district and campus expectations for student conduct and responds to parents regarding the importance of student responsibility.Collaborates with district and campus staff to ensure the effective implementation of district initiatives related to social emotional strategies.Collaborate with appropriate district and campus leadership to evaluate student discipline and attendance data at assigned campuses and determine needed actions to maintain a safe and supportive campus climate for all students and staff.Demonstrates the use of appropriate and effective techniques for community and parent involvement.School/Community RelationsArticulates the district's mission to the community and solicits community support in transforming the mission into reality.Fosters meaningful relationships with families and community stakeholders to create a strong neighborhood structure to support the learning of all students.Demonstrates awareness of school/community needs and initiates activities to meet those identified needs.Emphasizes and develops two-way communication between the school and community.Projects a positive image to the community.Attends School Board meetings/work sessions; and prepares and presents reports for the School Board, as requested.Professional Growth and DevelopmentEmbraces the Lamar CISD Leadership Definition competencies.Models a growth mind-set and encourages it in others.Collaboratively develops and implements department and campus leadership professional learning in alignment with other departments in the district.Uses information provided through assessment instruments, the district appraisal process, coaching and evaluative feedback from supervisor to improve performance.Strives to improve leadership skills through self-initiated professional learning activities.Utilizes information and insights gained in professional learning opportunities for self-improvement.Disseminates ideas and information to other professionals; provides leadership in addressing the challenges facing the profession.Conducts oneself in a professional, ethical, and responsible manner.Maintains current in research-based best practices.Assists as needed in the quality implementation of leadership pipeline programming including the onboarding and mentoring of new campus-based leadership.Attendance at work is an essential certificateValid Texas driver's licenseEligible for coverage under the District's vehicle insurance programSpecial Knowledge/Skills:Knowledge of curriculum and instruction, including best practices
