You will serve as a Boilermaker UEM Product Line, PWD Norfolk, VA.DutiesYou will follow safety rules and regulations for using, storing, and disposing of hazardous materials used in boilermaking work.You will perform cutting or fitting to install boilers, tanks, condensers, or components on ships.You will operate equipment (e.g., portable valve test system, test panels, pressure pumps, portable test units) to inspect and test boilers, condensers, or components.You will install and repair boiler furnace refractories and burner throats to maintain efficient operations.QualificationsAlthough a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability to do the work of a Boilermaker without more than normal supervision as demonstrated by duties such as: 1) Repairing tubes to include: removing, plugging, exchangers, preheater, and fuel oil heaters; 2) Cleaning firesides and watersides of watertube and firetube boilers, installing handhole plates and tightening or adjusting them as necessary to pass a hydrostatic test, and repairing boiler pressure parts; 3) Installing, maintaining and repairing boiler furnace refractories and burner throats, including building replacement walls. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.Additional InformationThis announcement uses the DHA for Certain Personnel DHA (a) Maintenance Activities direct hire authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program. Several vacancies may be filled. This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required. This position will be required to report in emergencies or inclement weather. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if the selectee fails to meet the pre-employment requirements, including failure to report to any of the scheduled appointments. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Lift pieces of metal weighing up to 100 pounds with assistance. The average weight lifted is 40 pounds and is carried approximately ten feet. Must have manual dexterity when operating power driven equipment to fabricate metal parts and in repair of steam boilers, metal structures, ect. Uses both arms and legs to climb ladders. Required to stand, walk, kneel, stoop, and crawl in performance of duties. Normal vision is required. Good hearing is required to hear instructions under noisy conditions, although a hearing aid is permitted. Depth perception is required for operating tool and reaching above shoulders while doing overhead work. Close attention of eyes to gauges, tools, etc., and ability to distinguish primary colors. WORKING CONDITIONS: Hazards encountered in this rating are not unusual, except for furnace explosions, which happen occasionally due to the nature of fuel being burned. Adequate ladders, stairways, and protective guards are provided where feasible. However, employee could be injured by falling or by bumping onto overhead pipes or beams while performing work around hot pipes and hot boiler furnaces. There is danger of cuts, burns, broken bones, and/or bruises. Thermal boiler plants may contain asbestos insulation and lead paint. Job site working environment involves exposure to hazardous equipment, pumps, air compressors, fans, energized electrical equipment, sharp edges, and high-pressured boilers, valves, and piping. Incumbent is exposed to potential toxic fumes, boiler gasses and chemical agents used for boiler water treatment and steam purification. Works indoors 80% of the time and outdoors 20% if the time.
