Senior Manager - Database Engineering

Overview In this role you drive the strategy, architecture, and operational excellence of enterprise databases across Azure, AWS, and on‑prem. You lead a distributed team to ensure availability, performance, security, and reliability for mission-critical applications. You will push modernization through automation, IaC, observability, and AI-assisted tooling, shaping a cloud-focused engineering model. Compensation / Benefits401k with employer matchflexible paid time offholidaysparental leaveslife and disability insurancehealth benefits (medical, dental, vision, prescriptions) ResponsibilitiesLead and manage a distributed team of Database Engineers across onshore and offshore locations, establishing clear ownership, accountability, engineering standards, performance expectations, and career development.Own end-to-end operational responsibility for all enterprise databases across on-premises, Microsoft Azure, and AWS environments, ensuring availability, reliability, performance, security, scalability, and operational health.Establish 24x7 operational coverage with monitoring, incident response, escalation, problem management, and capacity planning.Define and maintain the enterprise database engineering strategy, architecture, operating model, and platform roadmap across Azure, AWS, and on-premises.Provide technical leadership and establish engineering standards for SQL Server and Azure/AWS database offerings.Lead database migrations and modernization initiatives to cloud environments, including assessments, remediation, testing, and cutover.Develop and maintain database lifecycle management strategies, including upgrades and debt reduction.Establish telemetry, observability, monitoring, and alerting with IDERA and cloud-native capabilities; define actionable KPIs.Drive automation and Infrastructure as Code for provisioning, configuration, deployment, and lifecycle management.Establish GitHub-based engineering practices and AI-assisted tooling to improve automation, scripting, and code quality.Create and maintain comprehensive database engineering documentation in Confluence or equivalent platforms.Partner with cross-functional teams to standardize, secure, and operationalize database services.Drive continuous improvement across reliability, security, cost efficiency, and modernization. Key requirementsExtensive enterprise database engineering and leadership experience with distributed teams.Deep knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server architecture, HA, DR, security, backup/recovery, upgrades, and lifecycle management.Strong experience with Azure and AWS database offerings (Azure SQL Database/MI, SQL Server on Azure VM, SQL Server on EC2, RDS for SQL Server).Experience leading cloud migrations, upgrades, and modernizations; lifecycle management and debt remediation.Experience with telemetry, observability, monitoring, and alerting tools (IDERA or similar).Experience with modern engineering practices: IaC, automation, Git, CI/CD, IDEs, Confluence; AI-assisted tools (ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot).Master in Computer Science or related field with 15+ years of experience, or PhD/MD with 10+ years.Leadership and people managementCross-functional collaborationStrategic thinking and problem solvingMicrosoft SQL ServerAzure SQL DatabaseAzure SQL Managed Instance
