UNIX / Red Hat Subject Matter Expert (SME)

Position OverviewVision IT is seeking a highly skilled UNIX / Red Hat Subject Matter Expert (SME) to support mission-critical operations at Los Angeles Air Force Base (LAAFB). The ideal candidate will possess advanced expertise in Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), UNIX/Linux systems administration, cybersecurity compliance, and enterprise infrastructure support within a Department of Defense (DoD) environment.This position requires an active Secret Clearance and a current CompTIA Security+ certification in compliance with DoD 8570/8140 requirements. The selected candidate will work onsite and provide technical leadership, engineering support, and operational excellence for secure enterprise systems.(This Position is Contingent Upon Award)Key ResponsibilitiesServe as the primary SME for UNIX/Linux and Red Hat Enterprise Linux environments.Install, configure, harden, patch, and maintain RHEL and UNIX-based servers.Perform system administration, troubleshooting, performance tuning, and capacity planning.Support cybersecurity initiatives including STIG implementation, vulnerability remediation, and compliance audits.Maintain system availability, reliability, and security in a high-availability environment.Develop and maintain automation scripts using Bash, Python, or similar scripting languages.Support virtualization technologies, storage systems, and enterprise backup solutions.Monitor system health and respond to incidents, outages, and operational issues.Collaborate with cybersecurity teams, network engineers, and government personnel to ensure mission success.Create and maintain technical documentation, SOPs, and system diagrams.Participate in change management, configuration management, and disaster recovery planning.Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior administrators and support personnel.Required QualificationsActive Secret Clearance (required).Current CompTIA Security+ certification (required).Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field (or equivalent experience).7+ years of experience administering UNIX/Linux enterprise environments.Strong expertise with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) administration and engineering.Experience supporting DoD or federal government environments.Knowledge of DISA STIGs, RMF, ACAS, and vulnerability management processes.Experience with scripting and automation tools such as Bash, Python, or Ansible.Strong understanding of networking concepts, storage systems, and virtualization platforms.Ability to troubleshoot complex system and infrastructure issues independently.Excellent communication and documentation skills.Preferred QualificationsRed Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) or Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA).Experience with VMware, SAN/NAS storage, and cloud technologies.Familiarity with DevSecOps practices and configuration management tools.Additional DoD 8570 certifications are a plus.Why Vision IT?At Vision IT, we lead with People First, ensuring our employees and customers thrive.
