Job Details Location: Prestonsburg, KY 41653 (Prestonsburg, eastern Kentucky, Appalachian region) Position: Locum Tenens Gastroenterology Physician / Locum Gastroenterologist Setting: 192-bed hospital - hospital-based gastroenterology / inpatient & outpatient endoscopy suite Start Date: May 25, 2026 Assignment Duration: 13 weeks (potential for ongoing need) Estimated Weekly Pay: $6,150 - $7,280 Shift: 12-hour shifts (schedule to be discussed) Patient Volume: 20 patient encounters per shift Trauma Level: Level 4 Qualifications / Requirements Board eligible or board certified in Internal Medicine - Gastroenterology (GI) Active, unrestricted physician license in Kentucky (KY) Minimum 1 year of clinical gastroenterology experience required; fellowship (3 years) preferred Current ACLS and BLS certifications Proficiency in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures (see responsibilities) Strong patient-centered communication skills and ability to work in a multidisciplinary hospital team Core Responsibilities Perform upper GI endoscopy (EGD) including biopsies, foreign body removal, fulguration/cautery of bleeding lesions, and variceal injection/banding Perform diagnostic and therapeutic ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography) Perform colonoscopy and lower GI endoscopy, including polypectomy, biopsy, and flexible/rigid sigmoidoscopy Perform small bowel biopsy and liver biopsy procedures as indicated Manage PEG/feeding tube procedures and care as preferred Provide compassionate, efficient inpatient and procedural care to approximately 20 patients per shift Collaborate with surgery, radiology, hospital medicine, and nursing for coordinated patient care Document encounters and procedures timely in the hospital EMR and follow hospital credentialing and quality requirements This locum tenens gastroenterology opportunity in Prestonsburg, KY is ideal for GI physicians seeking hospital-based gastroenterology jobs, locum work in Kentucky, or short-term assignments in rural and Appalachian healthcare settings.
