We've come a long way, join us in the next step of our incredible journey!What are we looking forWorking within our stack design and verification team, reporting to the Head of Stack Development we have an opportunity for a hands-on R&D Test Capability Engineer to lead the design, build, commissioning, and operation of advanced test systems for next-generation PEM electrolyser stacks and full-scale clamping skid frames. This role combines mechanical design, test engineering, instrumentation, systems integration, and prototype development.ResponsibilitiesTechnical DutiesDesign and develop full-scale test capability systems for PEM electrolyser stacks and clamping skid assembliesSpecify and integrate instrumentation including pressure, temperature, flow, voltage, current, leak detection, and strain/load monitoring systemsSupport commissioning and operation of high-pressure systems in laboratory and pilot environmentsCreate detailed engineering drawings, P&IDs, assembly procedures, risk assessments, and technical documentationCollaborate closely with stack design, controls, manufacturing, and safety teams to deliver integrated test solutionsConduct root cause analysis and troubleshooting during prototype build and test campaignsDrive continuous improvement of test capability, reliability, automation, and data acquisition systemsSupport supplier engagement, component selection, fabrication oversight, and workshop activitiesEnsure compliance with relevant safety standards and engineering best practices for hydrogen systems and pressure equipmentDevelopment & Continuous ImprovementContribute to continuous improvement of products, processes, and R&D methodologiesStay up to date with emerging technologies, materials, and industry developmentsSupport knowledge sharing and lessons learned across projectsIdentify opportunities for innovation and efficiency improvementsHealth, Safety & Environment (HSE)Comply with all health, safety, and environmental policies and proceduresEnsure safe working practices in offices, workshops, and testing environmentsIdentify and report hazards, risks, and incidentsSupport risk assessments and implementation of appropriate controlsPromote a positive safety culture within R&D activitiesQuality & ComplianceEnsure work meets required quality standards, specifications, and regulationsFollow defined processes for design control, testing, and documentationSupport validation and verification activitiesMaintain accurate and traceable technical recordsContribute to continuous improvement of quality systems and processesAbout YouKnowledge and ExperienceDegree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Systems Engineering or related disciplineRequiredExperience designing and operating R&D test systems, prototype equipment, or industrial process skids.Strong understanding of mechanical structures, clamping systems, piping assemblies, and pressure containmentExperience with CAD tools such as SolidWorks, Inventor, Creo, or similarFamiliarity with instrumentation, DAQ systems, sensors, and automated test environmentsHands-on experience assembling and commissioning prototype hardwareKnowledge of PEM electrolyser, fuel cell, hydrogen, or electrochemical systems is highly desirableUnderstanding of pressure systems, fluid handling, thermal management, and industrial safety practicesStrong problem-solving skills with the ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary R&D teamsDesirableKnowledge of hydrogen regulations, CE/UKCA compliance, PED/ASME standards, or hazardous area designFamiliarity with PLC systems, or industrial automation platformsWelding, fabrication, or workshop experience for prototype developmentSkills and AbilitiesAnalytical and strong problem-solving skills (RCA)Strong Cross-functional collaborationClearly communicates technical concepts for non-technical peopleHands-on engineering mindset alongside evidence-based decision makingProactively identifies issues and implements solutionsFollows through on commitments with minimal supervisionDetail orientated with a level of attention to detailResilient and persistent when faced with setbacksWhat We OfferThe opportunity to work with cutting-edge technology in a rapidly growing industry, within a dynamic environment where you can shape the future of energy and work with a team that's actively addressing global climate challenges.
