Refuse Dispatcher

Under general supervision, performs clerical work in coordinating radio-dispatched collection of refuse/debris. Work involves receiving requests for sanitation service, dispatching Public Works employees to pick up refuse/debris, operating radio communications equipment, and maintaining records. Reports to the Refuse Operations Manger.To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential job functions satisfactorily. Since every duty associated with this position may not be described herein, employees may be required to perform duties not specifically spelled out in the job description, but which may be reasonably considered to be incidental in the performing of their duties just as though they were actually written out in this job description.Receives telephone or radio requests for sanitation services, including requests for pickup of special refuse, irregular household refuse, appliances, and yard debris; logs requests for extra collection services.Dispatches Public Works employees and sanitation trucks to collect special refuse/debris; determines location and number of trucks to be dispatched in response to each request.Maintains radio communications with department personnel; monitors status/location of field trucks and department personnel; conveys/relays information as appropriate.Establishes routing and schedules trucks to fill requests for collection of refuse/debris; reviews equipment status reports to assist in assigning and scheduling trucks.Manages data entry of items picked up, trash can confirmations, registrations and sales.Prepares reports and maintains records of department production, collection activities, and costs; monitors/tracks workload and schedules; prepares daily production reports reflecting collection services, extra pickup requests, and related tonnage; calculates data relating to debris tonnage, customer usage, daily activities costs, monthly production costs, or other data; prepares annual collection reports and forwards to supervisor; maintains file system of departmental records.Processes payroll documentation for the department; reviews payroll cards for accuracy, makes calculations, researches discrepancies, and forwards as appropriate; maintains employee leave records.Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, logs, daily production reports, annual collection reports, equipment repair forms, employee leave records, spreadsheets, or other documents.Receives various forms, reports, correspondence, production reports, payroll cards, equipment status reports, collection zone maps, manuals, reference materials, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.Operates a computer to enter, retrieve, review or modify data; verifies accuracy of entered data and makes corrections; utilizes word processing, spreadsheet, database, or other software programs.Generates and distributes reports of average running for compactor, automated and boom trucks; for employee attendance; for total trash can sales; for quick fax claims; and orders supplies as needed and prepares reports requested or needed by superiors.Attends the front desk in the division and interacts with walk-up and call in customers in a professional and courteous manor.Answers incoming telephone calls and communicates via two-way radio; provides information and assistance; records and relays messages; directs calls to appropriate personnel; returns calls as necessary; responds to requests for service or assistance.Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.Performs other related duties as required.High school diploma or GED; supplemented by five months previous experience and/or training involving radio dispatching, service scheduling/coordination, customer service, office administration, and personal computer operations; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Requires a valid driver's license.Ability to review, classify, categorize, prioritize, and/or analyze data. Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or work station. Requires the ability to: coordinate hands and eyes in using job-related automated office and radio communications equipment; handle a variety of items, office equipment, radio communications equipment, control knobs, switches, etc.; use one hand for twisting or turning motion while coordinating other hand with different activities; differentiate between colors and shades of color; talk and/or hear.
