The City is committed to fiscal responsibility, transparency, and delivering high-quality public services to its residents.Job SummaryThe Accountant I performs entry-level professional accounting work involving the preparation, analysis, and maintenance of financial records, reports, and fiscal statements. This position supports the City's financial operations by ensuring accuracy, compliance, and integrity of financial data.Working under the general supervision of the Finance Director, this role provides technical and administrative support across a variety of accounting functions.Key ResponsibilitiesAccounting Operations & ReportingPrepare journal entries and maintain the general ledgerPrepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial and operating reportsAssist with annual disclosures and financial reporting requirementsMonitor and maintain the Chart of AccountsAnalyze financial accounts and reconcile revenues, receivables, and interest earningsPrepare and submit required reports to local, state, and federal agenciesRevenue, Tax & CompliancePrepare State of Utah sales tax returns and assist with auditsProcess sales tax refunds and track revenue activityRecord Tax Increment Financing (TIF) transactionsAccrue anticipated revenues including property taxes and feesPurchasing & Accounts PayableReview and approve purchase requisitions and paymentsAudit invoices, purchase orders, and supporting documentationProcess accounts payable, including checks and electronic recordsReconcile credit card transactions and financial systemsGeneral Accounting SupportMaintain inventory of fixed assets and assist with capitalizationAssist with software testing and financial system updatesSupport annual audits and provide requested documentationPrepare reports, correspondence, and financial summariesJob Costing & Work OrdersMaintain job cost and work order systemsEnter and track work orders and reconcile to the general ledgerCustomer ServiceRespond to inquiries from the public and City staff regarding financial mattersRequired QualificationsEducation & ExperienceBachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related fieldOne (1) year of related accounting experienceOR an equivalent combination of education and experienceKnowledge, Skills & AbilitiesKnowledge of governmental accounting principles (GAAP) and budgeting practicesUnderstanding of financial reporting, recordkeeping, and compliance processesStrong analytical and problem-solving skillsAbility to organize work, meet deadlines, and manage multiple prioritiesProficiency with computers and financial systemsAbility to communicate effectively in writing and verballyAbility to prepare detailed financial reports and interpret data accuratelyWork EnvironmentThis position operates in a typical office environment with minimal exposure to outdoor conditions. Duties require sitting, walking, use of hands, and occasional lifting up to 10 pounds.
