Position Summary: As an Controls Engineering Trainee focused on SCADA and Industrial Control System (ICS) projects, you will work alongside an experienced engineer to design, program, troubleshoot, commission, and support industrial control systems. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with some automation, electrical, instrumentation, or controls experience who wants to develop into a well-rounded Controls Engineer. The role involves assisting with the development, improvement, and support of equipment used in landfills, wastewater treatment, biogas extraction, renewable natural gas (RNG), renewable energy, recycling, and organics processing applications. Candidates should be self-motivated, comfortable learning in a fast-paced environment, and willing to take on increasing responsibility. APS will provide practical training and exposure to real-world projects, with a career path toward Controls Engineer, Senior Controls Engineer, and technical leadership roles. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Assist with the programming, configuration, testing, and support of automated and electromechanical process control systems used in landfills, wastewater treatment, biogas extraction, renewable energy, recycling, and organics processing. Support automated systems remotely and on-site under the guidance of experienced engineers, including troubleshooting process equipment, implementing approved changes, assisting with process investigations, and documenting system improvements. Assist with the design, startup, commissioning, and ongoing support of automated systems and equipment installed at new and existing facilities. Learn and apply SCADA and ICS technologies, including PLCs, HMIs, instrumentation, industrial networks, and related control system components. Work with operations, compliance, information systems, engineering, and maintenance teams to understand system requirements and resolve technical issues. Develop strong customer communication skills and practical knowledge of automated and electromechanical process control systems and equipment. Assist with training local operators and managers on the proper operation of equipment and SCADA systems. Qualifications: Desired Skills: Some exposure to PLC programming or industrial automation platforms such as Rockwell Automation, SIEMENS, AutomationDirect, GE/Emerson, Inductive Automation Ignition, or similar systems. Classroom, internship, co-op, military, maintenance, or hands-on project experience is acceptable. Basic experience with or interest in developing and supporting HMI applications using AB PanelView, Maple Systems, FactoryTalk View, Ignition, or similar operator interface platforms. Familiarity with industrial instrumentation, electrical controls, motor controls, variable frequency drives (VFDs), or process equipment is a plus. Basic understanding of industrial communication and networking concepts, including Ethernet, EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP/IP, Modbus RTU, or similar protocols, is desirable. Interest in learning industrial process engineering and control system design principles. Ability or willingness to learn to read and interpret P&ID drawings across a range of industrial processes. Ability or willingness to learn to read electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic schematics. Strong mechanical or electrical aptitude with good troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Basic knowledge of AC/DC control circuitry and industrial control panels is preferred. Hands-on experience with electrical maintenance, instrumentation, industrial equipment, or automation projects is highly valued. Familiarity with the National Electrical Code (NEC) or applicable NFPA standards is a plus but not required. Proficient in Microsoft 365 applications and comfortable learning new engineering software. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, accept coaching, and take initiative in a fast-paced environment. Education and Experience: 1-3 years of experience in industrial automation, controls, instrumentation, electrical maintenance, mechatronics, or a related field. An associate or bachelor’s degree in engineering, engineering technology, electrical technology, industrial technology, or a related field is preferred; equivalent hands-on experience will also be considered. Additional Requirements: Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without requiring employer sponsorship for an employment visa. Must possess strong verbal and written English communication skills to effectively collaborate with clients and internal teams. Must be able to travel throughout the United States, including overnight travel as required. Must possess a valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record. Work Environment: Must be comfortable working in industrial environments, including landfills, wastewater treatment plants, manufacturing facilities, and other industrial sites. Hybrid role including office, shop, and on-site support for ICS and SCADA systems. Employees should expect regular in-person collaboration and hands-on training. Candidates should reside within approximately a 90-minute commute of our Tafton, PA office or willing to relocate. Travel of up to 50% may be required based on project needs, including field training, commissioning, startup, and customer support.
