Personal Care Assistant

I’m Blake, a 40-year-old man with spinal muscular atrophy living in Byram, MS along with my younger brother, Matt, 37, who has the same condition. We are looking for a personal care assistant, paid at $15/hour, to work a rotating schedule that covers every other weekend. This is an in-home position. Week 1: Monday, Tuesday, Saturday, Sunday Week 2: Wednesday, Thursday, Friday Repeat… Weekdays are 7am–6pm. Weekends are 7am–5pm. It is an in-home position, not a facility. My brother and I are the only clients. You will be employed and paid by the state agency, MDRS. There are opportunities to make extra, which I pay out-of-pocket. We provide free wifi. Responsibilities of the position The following is a summary of the main things we need help with. Bathing and dressing Help with meals and feeding Light housework, mainly our laundry and keeping our areas clean Repositioning/pressure relief Personal hygiene Other benefits of this position Friendly, low-pressure work environment It’s just us, you won’t be going to a different house every day There are opportunities to work extra which in some cases we compensate with cash Reliable schedule About you Must be patient and able to follow instructions Must be dependable (on time, etc) Must be generally positive, respectful, and non-judgmental It would be great if you have flexibility to fill in for others on occasion About us Matt and I are website developers. We use power wheelchairs to get around. We have spinal muscular atrophy type 2. This means our muscles are extremely weak. We need help to do most things, which is why we are hiring. We have equipment for transferring in and out of our chairs that’s easy to use. We live at home with our mother. You would be giving her a much-needed break.
