SummaryThis position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) - Veterans Health Administration (VHA) - Mid-Atlantic Health Care Network (VISN 6) - Hampton VA Medical Center (VAMC) - within the Environmental Management Service within the Textiles Section. The purpose of this position is to manage and provide clean linen services for the Medical Center.QualificationsTo qualify for this position - applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required - but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element - which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.DutiesMajor Duties: Linen Management: Separates and folds linen into appropriate categories prior to delivering to clinics and/or operating procedure roomsIncumbent will separate - fold - tie and/or stack rough-dry textiles by categoryAssignments include various linen duties - including counting - inventorying - and documenting when discrepancies occurIncumbent will rotate among workstationsPulls linens for assigned clinical areas and performs distribution tasks Marking Laundry Bundles: Incumbent marks laundry bundlesChecks number of items on tickets against actual items submittedNotes number of items that do not agree with ticketArranges into bins by matching identification symbols and colorsChecks lot contents against ticketTransporting: The incumbent operates one or more vehicles (based on availability) including pickup trucks and/or cargo vans for linen transporting assignmentsLoads and unloads the vehicles by hand - sometimes receiving help from other workersThe incumbent ensures all materials/cargo are protected from weather and that is properly distributed and secured to prevent damage or loss during transitThe incumbent is responsible for making certain that any material/cargo being hauled does not exceed the maximum weight allowable for the vehicle being drive Performs other Duites as assigned The incumbent uses judgment in doing the work according to set procedure - seeing that laundry tickets agree with the number of items in bundlesDeciding what identification symbol to use - sorting laundry by the washability of fabricsThe incumbent must make decisions on whether a particular item is suitable for the use within the medical facilityMust work in close coordination with the head nurses on wards and off-site locationsResponsible for delivery of all types of clean linen to the wards and other using servicesResponsible for maintaining proper linen quota levels of linen in each linen roomThe incumbent will be exposed to the possibility of bruises from carts or machineryThe incumbent will be subject to high temperatures - high humidity - unpleasant odorsSubject to possible falls on wet floors - bruises from moving cartsWorks in close contact with patients and staffThe incumbent is exposed to possible infectious materials in handling soiled linenIf required to sort laundry from patients with contagious diseases - protective masks - gloves - and gowns are wornMost work is accomplished in an industrial building - but some outside activity is required in a variety of weather conditionsWork Schedule: 7:00am-3:30PMTours may very based on needs of the servicePosition Description Title/PD#: Laundry Worker/PD03056A Physical Requirements: Physical efforts pertaining to laundry duties involve standing or walking continuously on concrete floorsThe incumbent needs a certain amount of quickness in hand and arms movements to meet production standardsMost of the jobs require frequent lifting of bundles weighing up to 25 lbsIn receiving and shipping - occasional lifting of bulk bundles weighing over 30 lbsis requiredPhysical efforts involving transporting duties involve reaching - bending - turning - moving hands - arms - feet - and legs to operate hand and foot controls for operate a motor vehicleDuties also include loading cargo with the assistance of other workers or utilizing weight handling equipmentLifting of linen weighing up to 100 lbsand stacking items on shelves over 60 inches off the floor is requiredThe incumbent will push linen carts weighing over 500 pounds
