Intermediate Grade Teacher Job DescriptionMacon County SchoolsPosition SummaryThe 5th-6th Grade Teacher provides standards-based instruction to upper elementary and early middle grades students in alignment with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NC SCOS). The teacher supports the transition from elementary to middle grades by fostering academic growth, independence, and organizational skills while promoting social-emotional development and college and career readiness.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesPlan and deliver instruction aligned with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NC SCOS) in core content areas (ELA, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies as assigned)Support students in developing foundational and intermediate skills in literacy, numeracy, and content-area learningUtilize a variety of instructional strategies to engage learners and promote critical thinking and problem-solvingDifferentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners, including Exceptional Children (EC), English learners (EL), and academically gifted studentsSupport students in developing organizational, study, and independent learning skills appropriate for upper elementary and middle grades transitionReinforce expectations for increased responsibility and academic accountabilityAssess student learning using formative and summative methods and use data to guide instructionMaintain accurate records of student performance, grades, and assessmentsCreate and maintain a safe, structured, and engaging classroom environment that promotes positive behavior and student engagementEstablish clear expectations, routines, and classroom management practicesIntegrate instructional technology and digital tools to enhance learning and support digital literacyPromote collaboration, communication, and problem-solving skillsCollaborate with grade-level teams, departmental staff (if applicable), and support personnel to improve student outcomesParticipate in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and data-driven decision-makingCommunicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress, behavior, and academic needsParticipate in conferences, school events, and transition-related activitiesSupport students' social-emotional development and adjustment to increased academic expectationsImplement school-wide initiatives such as MTSS, PBIS, or transition supportsParticipate in required professional development, meetings, and school activitiesFollow all Macon County Schools policies, procedures, and expectationsDemonstrate professionalism, ethical conduct, and a commitment to continuous improvementPerform other duties as assigned by school administrationKnowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of upper elementary and middle grades curriculum and instructional practicesUnderstanding of child development, particularly for pre-adolescent learners (ages 10-12)Ability to support student transition to increased academic rigor and independenceStrong classroom management and organizational skillsAbility to analyze and use student data to guide instructionEffective communication and interpersonal skillsAbility to build positive relationships with students, families, and staffProficiency in instructional technology and digital toolsPhysical Requirements Light to medium work classificationAbility to stand, walk, and actively engage with students throughout the dayOccasional lifting of instructional materials (up to 25 pounds)Evaluation Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the North Carolina Educator Effectiveness System (NCEES) and Macon County Schools evaluation proceduresTerms of Employment Full-time, 10-month positionSalary based on the North Carolina State Salary Schedule with applicable local supplementWork calendar determined by the districtBenefits Overview Medical, dental, and optional vision coverageParticipation in the NC Teachers' and State Employees' Retirement System (TSERS)Optional benefits (FSA, disability, life, etc.)Professional development and growth opportunitiesMinimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education, Middle Grades Education, or related field from an accredited institutionValid North Carolina teaching license appropriate to assignment (K-6 or Middle Grades 6-9 in relevant content areas)Knowledge of the NC Standard Course of Study (NC SCOS)Ability to meet all NCDPI and Macon County Schools employment requirements
