Essential Functions:
This position serves as a Spanish Language Court Interpreter in the courtroom; court-ordered mediation; plea negotiations; trustee; examiner; and special masters hearings; court-assigned counsel; home visitations; parenting classes; court information desks; and courtroom interpretation for interested parties, as deemed necessary by a presiding judge. Interpreter in court hearings, conversations, meetings or conferences. Sight translation of documents varying in levels of difficulty and legal terminology. May assist or support the Interpreter Coordinator role.
Education:
High school diploma (or GED equivalent).
Experience:
One (1) year of experience providing interpreting services as a freelance or court interpreter.
Preferred Experience: Three (3) years of experience preferred.
Required Certification: Maryland State Certification or Member of State Certification in the Council for Language Access or Federal Certification as a Spanish Court Interpreter.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Native or near native knowledge of English and Spanish to provide interpretation with correct grammar, idioms and pronunciation. Knowledge of legal terminology and the legal process. Knowledge of the Maryland Judicial system. Knowledge and compliance with the Code of Professional Conduct for Court Interpreters. Ability to interpret in simultaneous and consecutive modes, to sight translate documents varying in levels of difficulty and legal terminology, and to team interpret effectively. Ability to remain poised in stressful and pressured situations. Ability to provide consistent, professional and courteous service. Ability to use tact in responding to staff, public officials and the general public. Ability to work independently. Ability to operate a computer. Ability to perform all essential functions of the position.
