GIS Field Technician

Discover a more connected careerAt TelCom Construction, the GIS Technician – Underground Fiber is responsible for mapping, updating, and maintaining accurate geospatial records of underground fiber optic infrastructure. The role supports telecom network planning, design, construction, and maintenance teams by ensuring fiber routes, ducts, handholes, and related assets are accurately documented in the GIS system. This position is located at our Maple Grove location.Connecting You To Great BenefitsWeekly PaychecksPaid Time Off, Parental Leave, and HolidaysInsurance (including medical, prescription drug, dental, vision, disability, life insurance)401(k) w/ Company MatchStock Purchase PlanEducation ReimbursementLegal InsuranceDiscounts on gym memberships, pet insurance, and much more!What You’ll DoUpdate and maintain GIS databases for underground fiber optic networksDigitize fiber routes, ducts, manholes, handholes, splice points, and cabinetsInterpret construction drawings, as-built plansTake and uplaod required photesUpload required docs to GIS map locationsValidate and reconcile field data with design documentationPerform spatial analysis to support fiber route planning and expansionCoordinate with field engineers and construction teams for data verifiationMaintain attribute data including cable size, fiber count, splice details, and asset IDsEnsure compliance with telecom mapping standards and data quality controlGenerate maps, reports, and KMZ files for planning and operations teamsWhat You’ll NeedRequired QualificationsDiploma or Bachelor’s degree in GIS, Geomatics, Surveying, Civil Engineering, Telecommunications, or related field1–3 years of GIS experience (telecom or utilities preferred)Proficiency in ArcGIS or QGISExperience working with fiber network data or utility mappingKnowledge of underground infrastructure mapping standardsAbility to read fiber design drawings and as-built documentationUnderstanding of coordinate systems and spatial data accuracyTravel is requiredLocating experence preferredValid drivers LicenseAbility to walk long distancesAbility to lift up to 50 poundsPreferred SkillsExperience with fiber management systems and network inventory toolsFamiliarity with AutoCAD for interpreting engineering drawingsKnowledge of spatial databases (e.g., PostgreSQL / PostGIS)Basic scripting skills (Python) for GIS automationUnderstanding of telecom standards and right-of-way mappingKey Assets to be MappedFiber optic cables (single-mode / multi-mode)Conduits and ductsHandholes and manholesSplice enclosuresDistribution cabinetsAccess points and termination panelsWork EnvironmentField-based GIS work with occasional site visitsClose coordination with telecom engineers, planners, and construction teamsMay require working with large datasets and tight project deadlinesRequires travel up to 100% of the timeThe wage range for GIS Field Technician is $25.00 - $28.00.Why work with usYour career here is more than just a job — it's your pathway to opportunity.
