Flight Software Engineer | Spacecraft & Lunar RoboticsLocation: Hawthorne and El Segundo, Los Angeles, CAType: Full-time, on-sitePackage: Salary + equity, dependent on role and experienceI’m working with two early-stage space companies hiring Flight Software and Embedded Software Engineers.One is developing a novel electromechanical spacecraft system. The other is building autonomous lunar rover technology.Both roles sit close to the hardware, with involvement from software development through integration, testing and qualification.The opportunitiesSpacecraft flight softwareDevelop the software responsible for control, autonomy, communications, telemetry and fault management.You’ll contribute to the architecture, write production code and integrate it with vehicle hardware as the system progresses towards flight. An experienced engineer can take substantial ownership of the software and its delivery.Embedded Linux for lunar roboticsDevelop the embedded software platform supporting a lunar rover, working with onboard computing and the hardware it connects to.The work includes embedded Linux, board support packages, bootloaders, device trees, drivers and hardware/software integration.The workDepending on the role, you’ll:Develop and debug embedded software in C/C++.Make software design decisions based on hardware constraints and system requirements.Bring up hardware and integrate sensors, actuators and onboard electronics.Develop tests and support hardware-in-the-loop verification.Investigate issues that cross software and hardware boundaries.Work with avionics, mechanical, controls and systems engineers.Support integrated testing, qualification and flight readiness.Relevant experienceStrong C/C++ development skills in embedded or mission-critical systems.Experience with embedded Linux, an RTOS or bare-metal development, depending on the role.Practical experience integrating and debugging software on real hardware.Evidence of taking responsibility for software through development and testing.The ability to work through changing requirements in a small engineering team.Experience in spacecraft, launch vehicles, robotics or other demanding embedded systems would be relevant.
